I love the addition of Paganini(?) to this scene. "The Devil's Violinist" indeed!

What an odd arrangement. Its like a power ballad accompanied by a Rachmaninoff etude.

Hello @SanDiegoOpera. I'm a big fan of Susan Neves. I would like to convey my admiration to her, but I can't find her contacts in any way. Maybe you can help me? Can you tell me, at least her e-mail? Thank you in advance!

What is the origin of the name Stasyna? Is this May be Polish or Chech? Just curious.

Those low notes. Almost all Tenors don’t even sing that low on stage. Hell I can’t even reach the low Bb she sang most of the time. #notanoperasinger

Hi Nic. One thing that you haven't taken into account is the Italian inherent dramatiality of orchestral players. Why does Nabucco work so much better in Italy than anywhere else? It's because Verdi harnessed the 'town band' drama and incorporated it into his score. Rossini knew about this inherent musicality in his fellow countrymen from a very early age and specifically in opera. So whilst the examples you give are useful, they are FAR too polite. Especially in his Italian compositions, Rossini knew that piano should be pianissimo and that every player and singer loves to sing forte. If I wanted to get Rossinian flavour, I'd ask my orchestra to play Cujus Animam and THEN go back and play his earliest works. The tempests Rossini was famous for portraying didn't appear from nowhere!

Thanks for an excellent guide to this opera. Puccini's music is exquisite, but if ever there was a couple who did NOT deserve a happy ending it'sTurandot and Calif.

They deserved each other. They were selfish and cruel in the name of “love.” Day by day they will feed off each other. It’s a relationship that works-but will never fulfill the longings of the soul.
