Nice video. Getting back onto a little trapping this year after not doing any for 40-some years. In central Minnesota and got the "bug" after attending 2 days of the trappers convention. Just put out a few mink boxes and a couple coon sets, but really waiting for fisher season to give it my first try for them. Made 6 boxes for 160's and plan to get them out in 3 different locations hoping to get my 1st fisher cat !

Had a similar experience with a large buck whitetail. I was setting traps and heard something crossing the creek behind me. I stood and turned and he was about an arms length away stareing me right in the face. I froze and he looked at me for a minute and calmly climbed the creek bank in front of me. At the top of the bank he sniffed the air in front of him and then turned to look at me for a minute. Then went in the brush and stayed just in front of me the rest of the way down the creek. I could hear him as he made his way but I couldn't see him or any part of him. I thought nobody will ever believe this one. I'll never forget it. Good luck and good video.

I was watching your video when I thought I recognized the terrain. So I looked up what you mentioned was near the St. Louis river and it turned out that the St. Louis flows around the area I used to live in. I lived on the Iron Range in Iron Junction just outside Eveleth and Virginia on a farm there. At age 12, in the 1950's, I used to set trap lines for mink, ermine and muskrat using steel Victor traps (# 10's ? ...about 5-6 inches across). As I recall, the castor beaver scent I used at times smelled like anise or licorice. Beaver was long gone from our area by the fifties and, since you use beaver pelt and meat for bait, does that mean they've returned to the area? I also used to set snares for snowshoe hare (meat) and even red fox and sometimes got lucky. Another wonderful thing I see in your video is the return of the wolves! In the fifties there simply were no wolves in the area of northern Minnesota. The same was true for moose. I never trapped any fisher but that could have just been my own ignorance. I'm not familiar with the box/wire traps you are using...do you have a video that details them? If so, I'd like to see it. I like your videos. Pete Begich

Glad you liked the video, and that it could bring back some nostalgia. Yes the beaver are back and otters. Fisher probably weren't around much when you were here, their population didn't really rebound until the late 70s. If you watch my 2019 marten fisher video towards the end I show in a bit more detail how conibear traps work.

@@owenminnesotaoutdoors9664 I really appreciate your reply. It's just so neat that, since my time there, the wolves, marten, beaver and moose(?) have returned...they were just no longer around in my time. And I must confess that your video brought home and reminded me of just how formidable that winter in the northern Minnesota woods can be...I specifically recall checking traplines at 3:00 of a moonlit early morning at 25 below zero and how conscious I was of the latent danger it presented. If you're searching for video content, I know I would be very interested in how you prepare before going out (traps, bait, etc.) to make sets (if it won't give any secrets away). My brother and I knew a "real" trapper who, each fall, would buy and pack about 10 pounds of salt, slabs of bacon and enough coffee for eight months or so and head north into Canada setting up caches all along the way. He showed us some trapping techniques we had always used since then and they worked quite well. One technique was to try and eliminate all human scent from our traps. You probably already know this, but we would boil a cauldron of water with fresh-cut pine boughs and our traps in it for about an hour or two. After this we would only handle the traps wearing leather gloves or choppers (mittens). You could also spell out how you skin, stretch and dry your pelts and the techniques used for that. I'd be very interested to know. Just sayin'.
