Hello Richard, I have a SB Oren-O-Matic No1140 Model D and the clutch will not engage. I've taken apart several times, cleaned, reassembled, made sure the spring is catching, and still nothing. What am I missing? Thank you for your time, Wayupnorthofhwy8.

Rick, even though I have talked to you at length as you guided me through this video, I still just have to comment about this one. Your ability to creatively find ways to fix and repair reels even though parts are missing continues to amaze me. It challenges me to try innovative ways to repair what seems to be irreparable. You did this at least twice in this video and it was amazing. You remember that big TICA surf reel I bought for next to nothing that had a danaged part of the main gear shaft? I figured out a “Rick Stivers miracle” and got that reel working perfectly with a repair that should last indefinitely. As you said in your Kentucky drawl when I told you about it, “now if you hadn’t’ been watching my channel you probably wouldn’t have even tried to fix it.” You were very correct in that assessment as that old but beautiful TICA reel would have been headed for my parts reel boxes. When working on this reel you showed another of your many talents - the ability to figure out how to take apart what would confound other less tenacious individuals (such as me.) You also have an almost innate ability to remember how things go back together after you’ve taken them apart. I guess I simply enjoy seeing how your mind works. It is great that you were able to find someone to send you some photos of some missing]g parts that helped you find ways to substitute parts that would allow the reel to properly function. Again, this was an amazing video allowing us to watch over your shoulder and give understanding as to how you thought all this out. I call this one of your top five videos! For the life of me I don’t understand why you did not get more comments even if they only said, “WOW!” Maybe my usual overly verbose comment will compensate for this lack of deserved attention! - Chris

Chris, I’m still not sure that we aren’t missing something easier in the assembly process. Surely it wasn’t that difficult to assemble in the factory. I’m thinking that maybe they had some type of shoehorn device that allowed for simple assembly. That said, this reel was a lot of fun.

Bryan, I don’t think it has to have the U shaped cutouts. I think an ordinary drag washer of the correct size will work. You will need to measure the outside diameter, inside diameter and then thickness to find a suitable replacement. To the best of my knowledge, OEM parts are not available. With the correct measurements you can probably find a suitable drag washer by contacting: www.smoothdrag.com/wp/

Rotating parts that you want to put grease on. You can use the Cal's purple grease mixed with a little bit of oil. Gives you the extra friction protection but doesn't slow the reeling as much.

That version had the tool steel worm gear. Yours is in fine shape. Teeth, esp at ends, are intact. Can superglue a leather disc to the AB post too if needed. The spool end caps are there to slightly tension the spool evenly from each end. The spool should sit evenly and proper tension allows just a bit of side to side movement of the spool. They should not be used for casting tension. Thats the job of the AB post and/or one’s thumb.

Rick, Dennis Kuntz called this reel “ the Holy Grail.” It has been suggested by Dennis that the lever in the side plate is not another clicker but is a spool lock for when the reel is not in use. Julius Vom Hofe invented the star drag. IThis reel is not priceless but it is close from everything I’ve found out about it. Your friend, made an astounding purchase. Rick, you are one brave soul to take this reel apart! Dennis also said that Vom Hofe eventually merged with Ocean City. ORCA had extensive information about and history of Julius Vom Hofe reels. This may be one of your best videos ever Rick! Wow what a reel! - Chris

I'll bet the reel has two sets of clickers so the user has a little control over how much tension is required to move the spool. Small clicker in still water, big clicker in a little bit of current, both clickers in fast current. That's a chunky reel. The gears are massive! And the anti-reverse dog and ratchet too! But why? The reel has only two drag friction washers, so the maximum drag that can be applied shouldn't be all that high. And the reel has brass posts going between the two sides, so I'll bet reel flex also limits the amount of drag that can be applied. Hmmmm..... Maybe the stout gears and massive anti-reverse were intended to withstand the significant shock loads you might get when a big fish hits your lure while trolling with heavy Dacron line. I'll bet the reel predates monofilament, so shock leaders probably weren't a thing when the reel was designed. That's a cool reel.
@youngmartinsreels5314
@youngmartinsreels5314 17 күн бұрын
I think you could be correct about how the two clickers are used. Since I’ve started working on this reel I have found that Julius Vom Hofe filed the first patent for the star drag on fishing reels. Would someone else have come up with this design, maybe so. However, we can certainly trace some of the best ever reel design features back to him. Did he even have an understanding of surface area vs max drag, I don’t know. This reel was most likely built before 1939. Did early reel designers understand the physics involved in how a reel works. Many people during that time were highly educated but we’ve had so much more mechanical experience over the last hundred years to pull from. Do you think the first conventional reel designer was concerned with the shock applied to the reel when a fish hit. I don’t have any idea. This reel is a beast and it was built to handle big fish. The reel definitely predates monofilament line. Apparently these reels are highly sought after by collectors. I hope I haven’t devalued it with my amateurish repairs.

Rick, the DAM Quick Super is labeled a 270. The two speed model is a 275. This was quite the haul. I wish you could have gotten there before all the spinning reels were mostly gone. I did not know you were collecting both Bronson and Shakespeare spincast reels. My daughter could do the script on that Cassidy reel. She has done it on some of my Mitchell’s. It would be interesting to see both those 220 DQ reels compared in a video. You are correct that the DQ N reels are not the quality as the earlier ones. I have all of those except the 110. I knew when I said 500 that I had it wrong. I figured I would catch it on the edit but I forgot to. I decided a while back that because they were so colorful and reasonably inexpensive that the Bronson reels were an excellent choice for a display collection. The Shakespeare reels aren’t usually cheap but they make good display pieces too. I’ll see if I can manage the 220 reels fairly soon.
