Good on ya, fellas. This is my favorite JJ album (followed by Liquidizer and Doubt) for sure - and I have loved it since '93 when it first dropped. If you get a chance, listen to their 'B'-side "Change of Season." I love love LOVE that song. Forever. Thanks for the album listen, discussion and the review. I'm happy people are talking about this 30 years later!

I'll have to see if I have that Schuba's show. I'm sure it was on an old hard drive that crashed. I don't think I still have the show but I'll see if I can find it. I might know someone who has a copy.

i just listened on Spotify. i was dying to be on the panel of this show while listening haha. i wasn't particularly a numetal fan at the time, more of a hardcore and skate punk skater, but when it came on the scene i was in high school in Central Cali (where Korn is from) and all the shit you are taking about hit HARD and early there. i was really hoping for a mention of the first Earth Crisis record and the first Vision of Disorder record both from 93, which are the earliest that come to my mind with a nu metal sound, and they probably influenced bands that came after. your one host who said he was from a darker background of abuse and neglect was the one who really "got it" the most when you guys were trying to explain where this music was coming from. he exactly nailed it. there was a whole generation of kids from fucked up backgrounds who grew up on rap and metal, but in the 80s boys and men weren't allowed to talk about abuse, neglect, and emotions. so a lot of this genre and 90s metal was about a release for all that bottled up aggression and breaking the norms of what's allowed in genres and society. when you guys were trying to define what exactly makes something nu metal, i wanted to offer my definition: before nu metal, metal was for outcasts and stoners, angry hardcore was for angry extreme city kids, but nu metal came along and was hardcore/metal for average disenfranchised suburban and mall kids. i liked the mentions of the band Helmet, the bass player was my landlord for a while 😂😂

It really sucks to hear how much he hates the self-titled album, but for me, I thought it was a masterpiece. It's what got me into The Dreaming and got me through a rough decade of my life. I would love to hear the demo versions of the songs to hear it from his perspective though.

The focus on the significance of the double bass here is...odd? FWIW, Jack Griego was a thrash drummer prior to For Squirrels.

It's a real DRY album. I prefer Urban Hymns and A Storm In Heaven, even Forth. It starts off good, but the mid to latter half doesn't offer much for me. Nick McCabe's best guitar work is on the 1st album

The live version of Life's an Ocean beats the album version. Stormy Clouds & Reprise are awesome, IMO. This is probably my fav album of theirs. It's a non-skippable album, for me. Everyone is different.

Thank you for doing an INXS album. Thank you for doing one that was mostly ignored by the American listening public. I'm probably one of the biggest non-Australian INXS fans there is but that's another story for another day. I bought every INXS album from X up to Elegantly Wasted the day they were released. I got Thieves for Christmas and Kick for my birthday the following year, I digress. Anyway, it's in my top five of favorite INXS albums preceded by Kick, Thieves, Welcome and X. Some mentioned one of the reasons I like INXS which is most of their albums don't sound the same. Their debut sounds nothing like Elegantly Wasted. I'll digress again and say that's why Def Leppard isn't a top band of mine. They're competent players but their music pretty much the same thing over and over. I also agree that Kick and X sound the most similar. Probably because Kick was such a hit. Maybe you guys heard the story about the president of Atlantic Records offering the band $1M to scrap Kick. The joke being on the record company because it made them international stars. Now for Full Moon Dirty Hearts. Someone had a similar thought I had about this album. I heard that Michael wanted to get in on the grunge craze, but the album sounds more like something Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd would do, meaning it's more of a jam or concept album verses a hit factory like Kick. The songs are longer and don't have that distinct hook like Need You Tonight or New Sensation. It's definitely more of a rock album than a pop album. I'm the only one I know, who like INXS, that likes this album. I like more of their albums, except their debut, too punk for me. It's not bad but it's not my taste. Now, the songs: 1. My top tier songs are THE GIFT, love the distorted guitar, the midsection where Michael talks and the overall rock vibe. I think it's the best song on the album; CUT YOUR ROSES DOWN, I love the funk element it's fun down to the lyrics; I'M ONLY LOOKING, I love the jazz element, especially the muted trumpet and Michael's muted vocals; FREEDOM DEEP, I love the moodiness and the soft nature of the song. I feel like I'm floating when I hear it and when it reaches it crescendo, I feel like I'm soaring along with the song; FULL MOON DIRTY HEARTS, I think Chrissie Hynde was a better duet partner than Ray Charles. I thought their voices worked well together. It was a pairing I wish I would've heard more from. 2. My Mid-tier songs are DAYS OF RUST, I like it grit and the hard rocking nature of the song but I think The Gift is far superior, VIKINGJUICE, the music has that Viking warrior quality like Immigrant Song and Michael sounds like he's either hallucinating, drunk or in a dream like state; THE MESSENGER, a good rock groove but The Gift is far superior; and TIME, again, a good rocker but The Gift is far superior. 3. Near the bottom: MAKE YOUR PEACE it feels more like a filler song like they ran out of ideas when they came to it; PLEASE, I like the idea of Ray Charles, but I don't think it worked. I also feel like they were trying too hard to be soulful and it didn't quite make it. When I hear it, it's like I hear the effort, but it doesn't go anywhere. 4. Least Favorite: KILL THE PAIN, I'm sorry this is the song I skip. I just hate it because it's a real downer, sorry! So, I think it's a good album but not a great one. Let's see I give Kick; Thieves and Welcome a (10). I think they are well-executed albums. I give X an 8.5 because it's well-produced, has mostly great songs but not as good as the other three. This one I'd give a 7.5. I give them credit for trying something different, the production is a bit heavy, I agree, however, with the exception of a couple of songs, I think it mostly works. Oh, and I think it's album worthy.

INXS’ 90s albums are overlooked and underrated. They built a career and cut their teeth on their sonic diversity, then because Kick became such a global phenomenon most mainstream music fans expected more of the same. I prefer Welcome to Wherever You Are to Full Moon Dirty Hearts, and thought Elegantly Wasted was an exciting enticement of what could have come. But FMDH had some gems, as all their albums do.

Paul O'Niel of Savatage was the producer and manager, which is why the sound sucked so bad. He screwed them on royalties, tours, merch and many other things including putting it in the label's ear that Ray was the star of the band and was writing hit songs that Jake refused to do, and that is what caused Eric to leave for Paul Stanley, the band to break up, and also why the sound was so bad due to Paul's "sound". Listen to Savatage records and you can hear it. He also told Ray to not tell anyone about his disease. He is a all around piece of shit who ruined this band.

Eric Singer was in Olivia Newton John's band, then Lita Ford. When Lita was married or dating Tony Iommi he stole him from her band for Sabbath. I believe he did the Gary Moore tour somewhere in between. Also was in and out of Alice Cooper for years. Had a cool project with John Corabi (Motley Crue/The Scream/Union/Ratt, Brides of Destruction/Dead Daises) and Bruce Kulick (Kiss/Union/Grand Funk Railroad), called E.S.P. Eric Singer Project. They were basically Union with Singer on drums and a couple songs he sang.

From what I recall, Atlantic refuses to re release the records for a couple of factors. 1. Ray was dating the owner's niece at the time and she got sick also. He never told anyone about his disease. 2. Ray's family doesnt want them out either. They do not want to go through the pain again, due to the families of those who he got sick, all are owned a lot of money from his estate, and the family would have to go through all the court proceedings and just do not want to rehash the tragedy of it all.
@kikiki45928 ай бұрын
Ray, despite his demons, is still imo, the best singer I have ever heard. I love all of the Badlands stuff and the Sabbath release of Ray's Eternal Idol, which also has a live set on it. He was perfect in both bands. Sucks that Paul O'Niel screwed this band so much, they could of been huge.
