What I really love about this story is that it shows how much trust we place in people who claim to have expert knowledge. Only a tiny handful of people in the world are capable of hiring a submersible to go down to check out the wreck of the Titanic, so we just have to take Cameron at his word when he says all those little details in the film are authentic. Cameron getting the sky wrong fucks up that trust.
