He shared the following in response to your questions. “It is truly tragic scenes that are unfolding in the Rio Grande do Sul area. The planet is getting warmer (Climate Change) and that is making both flooding and droughts more intense around the world see for example (www.climameter.org/20240502-south-brazil-floods). So, sadly this is not solely a Brazilian problem. Since flooding (and droughts) are going to get worse we need to re-think how we prepare for these events. The analyses that I have read don’t attribute this or the previous flooding in the region to El Niño (Southern Oscillation). Digital solutions, similar to but focused on flood management, can be used to facilitate more efficient cost effective designs for both flooding and drought. Sometimes all at once, for example, one can divert flood waters to “safe” areas where it can be recharged into aquifers where it could supply drinking or irrigation supplies during dry periods. As the climate becomes more extreme, and it will worsen, we need to apply more holistic solutions that can provide resilience for both extremes. Digital tools facilitate testing against future situations, as well as, improve stakeholder engagement - we need everyone to understand why areas need to be kept clear to accept flood water, as well as, recharge aquifers.
