I have a bachelor degree, certs, and paid $600 for professional services for my resume. I still haven't landed a cyber security role yet. I am still training to keep my skills up to par so I'll be ready when that time comes.

It is worth it. Once you get in the reward of being in cyber is big. But even after starting your career the learning will never stop. If you’re applying for jobs you have to be strategic. Don’t use a shotgun approach where you apply for as many jobs as you possibly can using the same resume.

I get the imression that in today's specific job hunting environment for "IT" is if you have a consistent history of working in or around technology for the last decade and looked like you pivoted enough times to the point you were on the verge of fully going to Help Desk or an Analyst type of position, they're more include to hire those people simply because there's true history there and not someone who just got a certification within the last few months or year or two. They're giving those people more chances simply because they're not abandoning what they like to work around. This is spite of degrees, certifications, or connections you may have imo. Now, the only hard aspect is that the jobs you want will be more than likely in another city and not your own, especially for the pay desired. Forget about remote, you might as well get a customer service or customer support job to sneak in that way but under pay.

The notion that getting into cyber is only through help desk or IT pisses me off. That is probably one of the worst ways to get into cyber. You’re not going to learn anything security specific working helpdesk. Period. There are a lot of dinosaurs out there that got into cyber this way 20 years ago. Today that is not the case. One of the most efficient ways is going the formal education way, that’s when you can leverage that to get an internship and gain actual experience while you’re getting the education. But I do agree that starting out you might have to move to another location for a job and your first job won’t have great pay. But it is instrumental in getting the first job even if underpaid a bit. Once you have 2-3 years of that work experience you’ll be able to land better jobs. It took me about 2 years to get to the 6 figure salary. All this being said, I wish you luck in all your endeavors.

It's not only a cybersecurity job problem, almost every job is like this, especially in IT. Have a bachelors degree with 5 yrs of experience, but be 23 yrs old...

I agree, the job market in general is horrible right now. This video was more aimed at people that have no experience at all and are just trying to break into the tech sector. It gets exponentially harder to start a tech career without a degree. But you have to be persistent and just keep applying and tailoring your resume for specific jobs and roles.

I am stuck in the middle right now trying to switch career paths. I have almost a decade in physical security experience (Federal Prisons) and experience in management and customer service. I decided to make a switch to Cyber by going back to school. I am already in the process of my degree and earning certs. The hardest part for me is knowing where to look. I am a person who learns by doing and am confident in my abilities. My struggle is finding someone who is willing to take a chance on me even though I am still in school. That and how to lay out my resume properly so that I can show I have skills even though I have no IT experience, minus self taught building computers, and that I am still in school.

Jacob, This is going to sound crazy, believe it or not...but I also have a corrections background. I worked for DOC for 10 years as a CO and went to school to get my BAS in Cyber Security. So we both come from pretty much identical backgrounds. I made it out and so will you. The struggle was real, juggling a full time job and full time school was not easy. When I was almost through my AAS I was able to get an internship. I started this channel specifically to help people like you, because I was also in the same spot. I will make a video on the topic of how to get your first job/internship and share some strategies. But here is the TL;DR: 1. If your college/university has some sort of Tech/Cyber club I encourage you to join and be a part of it. 2. Reach out to your College/University cyber security coordinator or someone equivalent, at times they get requests from local employers asking for interns. 3. Start looking for an internship that is local and then expand out, as mentioned in the video your first cyber job/internship is very important, this is where you will get the most experience and value. Don't worry about the salary for the first one, get what you can. 4. Look up local cyber security groups online, like meetup.com etc. Join them. Network with people in the community. This is going to be the best way to meet people locally that are in the industry. 5. Build out your linkedin profile, start networking with other students, professors and then expand the network out. 6. I will have a video specific to a resume for cyber. 7. If you haven't subscribed yet, I encourage you to.
