There is a guy in Alberta (@dongjianyi2492) that grows tomatoes for market in green houses and he has some interesting solutions for the particular climate posed in the plains. As you may know Alberta has low temperatures in the grown so Russell Finches solution with geothermal heating does not work to well here. Nebraska has a thermal temp 8 feet deep of around 11C year round, for comparison Alberta as well as Saskatchewan, to get a stable temperature You have to go 10 feet or more for a stable temp of 8C. It seems that the further north the colder the ground get except for places with geothermal activity, western Canada has none. Dong Jianyi uses a double layer Chinese green house with a blanket in between and he shrinks the interior green house in the winter and uses motors on the exterior to shake snow off. Now he has partnered with a local bit coin mining company to heat the green houses with a fancy generator to miner to water setup, however originally I think that he did not use any supplementary heating at all. This is I think the exciting difference between him and the bananas guy (@ArkopiaKZbin)(Saskatchewan) who uses a natural gas heater during cold dark stretches. This is also to say that Dong Jianyi does not yet have a maximally efficient set up as he seems to have not insulated the green houses from the relatively cold ground especially considering that frost can penetrate up to ten feet in Alberta before the snow sets in. He does use a clay structural wall as a heat sink to help maintain temperatures through the night, although i wonder is a larger water regulated sand pad on top of foam could provide better longevity. Anyways only so much can be said in a comment. I thought that if you had not heard of him before he may have some good insights into northern climb green houses put up on a budget to serve a realistic purpose.
