I lived at 31 Bella St Bolton and I always heard the older ones talking about this disaster, because one of the young men that dies lived at 41 Bella St his name was Cyril Cattell the reason I am telling you this is when I was reading up about him I went into a charity shop the same week and picked up a book that belonged to Sir Geoffrey Hulton 1920-1993 a family member of the people that owned the pit. The book is about the of the order of the garter. The Hulton family have a lot of history with St Marys church Deane Bolton its the oldest one in Bolton its worth looking at as many of the victims are buried there.

Hi Me Me Moore We are currently researching William Markland, one of those mentioned as a rescuer who received the Edward Medal, not the young lad who died in the disaster. There are a number of William Marklands in the area at the Tim, including the young lad’s dad. Does your book give any detail at all regarding the rescue team which could help identify which William Markland was the hero? eg age, address, family circs? Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Uploaded by Wigan Museums and Archives? BUT - this colliery explosion did NOT happen in a 'Wigan colliery'. WHY, then, is information related to an explosion at Maypole Colliery, in ABRAM, near Wigan, shown during a verbal description of 344 men and boys being killed in Pretoria Pit, Hulton Colliery, Westhoughton, near Bolton? Maypole Colliery explosion had nothing todo with Pretoria Pit. The lengths Wigan council will go to, in order to include Wigan in everything, are beyond belief. The Pretoria Pit disaster was not included in Wigan life.
