I'm at a loss as to why you need to do any of this when the Crop tools has a straighten function for levelling the horizon and has options for thirds/diagonal/phi/golden spiral overlays ?

A year later and I made my own protractor, a bit different from yours because I use it for my lifting plans for cranes and I need to be precise in some areas. It took me a while because I could not figure out how to CTRL + J the 360 radials, so I had to manually do them all.
@FosterYourAffinity17 күн бұрын
You know, now, you can simply lay out the first line of the radial, then press enter. After pressing enter a new menu comes up. You can repeat the line around an axis perfectly in specific degrees; 1° increments if you wish. It's a new function they added around 2.2 or 2.3 update. It's called Move Entry Data, and Andy Capstick from Affinity Spotlight does a really good job explaining how it works, and demonstrating how to use it. Check it out here: affinityspotlight.com/article/cool-rotations-and-transforms-in-affinity-22/ I really wish they'd had this when I made my protractor! lol I did mine all by Command+J too! This was helpful. The new interface is far from intuitive. The learning curve is ridiculous. Clearly they have no human factors experts to help them design logical interfaces. It’s still a good value, but damn they could certainly design the interface better.
@FosterYourAffinity23 күн бұрын
When Affinity V2 first came out there were a lot of raised voices. I think the problems arise for them when trying to translate their desktop interface to the iPad size/form factor. The fact that they have been able to include as much as they have on the iPad versions of the apps is pretty incredible, but it comes with a substantial cost in both space and convenience. I have always hoped that they would expand the "personas" they have created. If they created different personas for all the items and studios they have currently tucked away in drop downs and hidden menus, I think people would be happier. Heck, they could even allow users to create custom personas. Who knows what they'll do in the future?! Thanks for watching the video!

why does the vector persona make a new layer for every stroke?? Like in pixel persona I decide myself to make a layer and put several strokes into it
@FosterYourAffinityАй бұрын
The app considers that every object is a layer. That's why it's always a good idea to add a vector layer first, and then select it before you begin to draw. That way you can keep the vector lines for certain parts of the drawing all together and better organized.

So, to do the loop select with the node tool you either hold down option or swipe to lock it. Once it's locked it will turn blue. (option is the bottom one) Once you're done, you can swipe down again and unlock it. I hope this helps! 😄

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I would also like to ask what the differences would be if I use the vector brush tool?
@FosterYourAffinity3 ай бұрын
Hey! Thank you for watching! Well, there have been many new developments since I filmed these sessions. These days, we've got a bit of an issue with the new "auto smoothing" that is happening by default on both the brush and pencil tool. They added this feature to try and help us, but it is actually a bit of an issue these days. It's really tricky to get the right pressure curve and look now from just one stroke. They added the line weight tool to try and make editing the line easier, but I feel like it takes away from the natural drawing experience. - With the vector brush tool there are only two things to remember. It was designed to allow us to use Textured Intensity brush images. So, it's really useful for drawing or painting textured image lines. However, you can't expand the image into vector. Only the path will be vectorized. However, you can create "basic round" brushes for the brush tool which can be vectorized and expanded if you wish. In the past I actually favored using the brush tool with a round brush to do vector inking because the lines would not remain selected after drawing them. But now, the pencil tool has been given the same option by simply toggling "keep selected" - I just hope they work out the auto smoothing soon. It's a bit wonky still, and It doesn't feel as smooth or natural as it used to. I really appreciate them trying to help us though. The vector line work is a tough nut to crack! I hope this helped!

Hey! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I've been really busy with work these days. Hmmm. Well, on iPad, you can use finger gestures to perform different types of movements with the node and pen tool. I used a press and hold gesture there. If the node is aready a "smart" or "smooth" node, can use a one finger press and hold gesture to break the symmetrical movement of the node handles. Then you can adjust only one side of it as desired. I hope this answers the question, and sorry again about the delay. My KZbin has fallen by the wayside these days as I am really hemmed up with other work at the moment! Take care, and best wishes.

Great tutorial. Been wondering how do you choose the dots size ?
@FosterYourAffinity4 ай бұрын
! Great question! First off, thanks for watching the video! Well, the dot size is pretty arbitrary with respect to this particular demonstration. The ipad templates and tutorials I included in the kit were designed for single panel illustrations. It would appear quite different if I were to try and illustrate a sequence of panels on this size canvas. Also, in the beginning, the QKV was created specifically because we cannot generate the halftone dots inside Affinity Designer on its own. So the plate system I devised to work within the app has a fixed dot size as the plates are previously rasterized pixel layers. You could in theory select them all and transform them down to a smaller size, but you'd get lots of pixelation and distortion. Also, you wouldn't have enough dots to cover the entire canvas if you transformed the dots down to a smaller size. The original dot size was chosen as it looked appropriate to what would be there in a single panel an entire imaginary comic page had actually been printed. I hope this answers your question. Thanks again for dropping by!
@theoneeyedkangaroo4 ай бұрын
@FosterYourAffinity Once again great explanation, thanks ;) You know I'm using Color lab for Procreate and tools have a grain scale adjustment which makes them dots appear bigger or smaller plus canvas size itself make them appear different to the eye. Just feels like I'm out of balance with that process so looking everywhere for some clues. I know what overall look I wanna achieve but I'm not quite there... Cheers

Which tablet would you recommend more Deco pro medium Huion q620m Huion inspiroy 2 L
@FosterYourAffinity7 ай бұрын
Well, here's the deal. In full disclosure. I have been super busy since I made this video. I had prepared a full review of the Inspiroy 2L. In terms of the tablets I have used. I much prefer the Huion. It's all about the pen and drawing surface. XP's pens from the Deco Pro lines were just too wobbly and clicky. - However, a few months ago, I upgraded to a Huion Kamvas 22 Plus, and I love the heck out of it. The pen is nearly identical, can use plastic and felt nibs, and is very responsive. - I bought the Kamvas on the strength of the pen that came with the Huion Inspiroy 2L. I just really liked it. After a while, I realized how tough it was for me to assimilate to drawing on the tablet. So, even though I was getting pretty good at it, I decided It would be better and more time efficient for me to upgrade to a display. However, I still use the Huion Inspiroy with my laptop for sketching and coloring stuff when I'm away from my home office. It's pretty awesome, much better than the Deco Pro in my opinion.

One possible reason why the stroke/fill change where the front/back affect happens is that in printing, you need the fill to bleed into the stroke so if any misregistration in print occurs there’s an overlap to fix it so no white gap occurs. Ensure you select the stroke to “overprint”.

Thanks for taking the time to go over this. Always learn new stuff. One idea you may wish to implement for showing the editing and changing abilities of the various strokes is to start with an existing graphic, try recreate it on screen from start to finish, and show how its strokes were made and applied. This will give a more visual and practical look at how the changes can affect the designs outcome in a visual way. Again, thanks.

26:12 what is precision mode and how do you use it?
@FosterYourAffinity9 ай бұрын
Precision mode is a stabilization feature that is native to the drawing tablet I use. I use a Huion Inspiroy 2L these days, but in my experience both XP-Pen and Huion tablets have this feature. Essentially it is a stabilization feature that restricts active area of the tablet and slows the speed of the input so that you can draw difficult lines steadily. I should note that Affinity's stabilization is also good, but the implementation features the ropes that you must pull along the path. Sometimes this is very helpful, but often times I use the tablet's precision mode as it is a bit easier to control.

any recommendation for a good vector brush pack to buy, for drawing smooth tapered ink lines?
@FosterYourAffinity9 ай бұрын
To be honest, these days because of the new pencil tool improvements I have been using basic rounds with pressure. I think they are superior to textured intensity brushes because if you need to expand them later you can. You also have to consider that they do not have any extra data attached to them i.e. the textured image. It is still not perfect yet. On iPad at least, if you try to go to fast you will get crashes. Especially if you use the stabilizer. On desktop you won't run into many problems at all, - it seems to be all about the way the iPad version processes everything. On iPad we have to go a little more slowly. As for the line tapering. Try this, if you're on iPad, tr going to the navigator studio, toggle the FX view off, and set the main view mode to Pixel. Now, if you want to ink with the pencil or brush tool, it will allow you to see how the lines are really presenting in pixels, and will allow you to go just a tiny bit faster with your drawing. You should still use caution not to go too fast though. It takes a bit of self control. I crash a lot becuase once I get flowing, I sometimes forget that I am working with vector and not pixel. The point is though that it shows you just exactly how fine the taper "really" is. We have to remember that the vector information is there so that when we export the final images, the vector data can be translated to whatever dpi and size we want without loss of fidelity and clarity. That's why it's great to work in vector for certain things. It gives us absolute confidence that our final output will be crystal clear no matter what size we need to export at. - Try out the new pencil tool feature "toggle keep selected" - It's much more like drawing with the brush tool. I have been using it almost exclusively lately. - I hope this helps!

Question if you don't mind helping me out with brush strokes.(affinity photo) For context i have a touch screen laptop. When i switch from using the scroll pad to the touchscreen the opacity drastically lightens even though it's the same number and size and brush. Kind of a hassle just editing from the scroll pad😂 Any advice on what I'm doing wrong or how i can fix it?
@FosterYourAffinity10 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for watching the video and for the interesting question! - Well, I can't be sure about it, but you see. with the scroll pad, there may be some data input that is having an effect on the opacity. I can't be sure what the problem is there, but you might try checking the brush you are using to see if you have linked the opacity to the pressure. That might be adding anunwanted element to the equation. Also, you might try just turning the controller of the brush from pressure to none. - You won't be able to draw with pressure from your stylus (if you are using one) but it might mitigate the problem as well. - You can preset the desired pressure in the stroke studio pressure window. - I wish I could offer more, but I don't have any experience with touchscreen laptops! I'm not quite sure what they are capable of. I use a Huion drawing tablet for my desktop application, and of course my iPad has the apple pencil. - Let me know if these solutions help! Do you know how long the tip of the Pen lasts?
@FosterYourAffinity Жыл бұрын
Well, I just changed mine at the end of October. I would say it all really depends on how often you use it. I’m drawing on my tablet about 1-2 hours every day. Some people claim the nibs last much much longer, but in my experience they do get worn down near the tip after about 4 months; 5 months max. Also contrary to reports by some, I think it definitely effects the drawing experience because the distance between the pen tip and the pen itself changes with retraction; thus altering the data being transmitted by the pen. I start to notice when my nibs is getting worn down when the pen sensitivity and pressure suddenly starts to feel different even though I haven’t adjusted the settings. - So yeah, in my experience, the nibs wear down after about 4 months of daily use.

A great app/plugin indeed. The thing that takes away my excitement though, is the ‘subscription model’. I can’t stomach it. It’s not an application anymore. It’s ’live service’ and companies should use that term to begin with. Thank you for the demo.
@FosterYourAffinity Жыл бұрын
My pleasure! I can understand you. It seems more and more companies are moving towards this model. I guess it has something to do with staying competitive and sustaining a software’s “release, fix, update, release” cycle. However, with this one you can buy the software outright for a lifetime license. I think subscription models get a bit pricey over time, and I usually opt to get lifetime licenses when they’re available. I’m kind of torn though because it is obvious they put a great deal of passion and effort into the software. I think they’re targeting a very specific set of people; enthusiasts and professionals who absolutely need to reproduce this kind of look. It’s a great set of tools, and I had a blast working with it.
