It probably was but on the off chance it wasn’t would you rather take the risk or land the plane? We do the same thing when kids call in threats to a school. Yeah, odds are that they’re not gonna be able to make one, but on the off chance that they do have the materials and the know how to do so you’d rather not take the risk.

Not extremely uncommon. As a Radar Approach controller, inflight emergencies due to electrical and hydraulic issues are fairly common. Generally not a serious flight safety concern, but a requirement to declare nonetheless. Losing an engine is a more serious issue, but I’ve never personally seen a crash due to a single engine out.
