Southgate was a rat run, one way in one way out. All the other estates were better.

My brother had a studio flat there and was a good stop off after a night in the Cherry Tree pub and the lodge chippy. Good times.

I remember videoing Legoland when it was on BBC News Northwest in around August/ 1990. They interviewed former residents. I still have the video tape after all those years and can’t find it on KZbin. Today, they would make this a Grade 2 listed building if it was still standing. It was designed by a famous architect. Demolition had just started when it was on the news.

Very interesting! sad an interesting building could not be repurposed or reimagined. What replaced it was... suburban banality

from my last comment, when I first moved to Runcorn on a late Friday afternoon in early Sept of 1991 myself and kids went to the shopping city to get our weekly shopping as my then wife was still in hospital in Gobowen recovering from a massive spinal operation to straighten her spine and we moved 3 days before she was discharged so that the move was complete and all the furniture in place, but while we was in the shopping city I heard many people refer Southgate to concrete City as thats all it looked like, and then all the new alterations to the shopping city and then the renaming to Halton Lea

I lived in Runcorn when they demolished Southgate est as it was an absolute eyesore those flats or houses with the round widows, who ever the architect was that design those with the stupid round windows must have been pissed at the time, goodness knows what the damn builders must have thought when they saw the plans, I bet they had a right old laugh and had to go and get pissed to get over what they saw, I was still there when they rebuilt the estate and boy what a massive improvement with its own pub and if memory serves me right its own park for the kids and the estate fenced off down one side thats all I remember as I moved away in Dec 2000

It was James stirring he designed them so they remind the residents of living in a boat trusts why the windows are round like portholes it’s cos it was built for people in Liverpool to move there and was meant to remind them /feel more like Liverpool idk

Thanks for posting this (over 10 years ago). This was a slightly random youtube find for me - with quite an emotional impact. My old house appears briefly at 04:30. Southgate had problems; but it had character too.

Welldone for uploading this and I like it so thumbs up. It would've been good if they'd had videoed the destruction of Norton Priory County High School back in 2002. It's good for posterity I suppose especially for those who hated the place but not so for those who may have liked it.

Worked on the demolition of this site for months. Most of the rubble was taken to various tips around the area.It was sad to see all the personal items and childrens toys etc which were left behind by the families.

I lived in Murdishaw at the time, and we always used to go down to the shopping city and across the famous iron bridge over to Southgate, to skateboard and just to play! As a child it made me feel uneasy and unwelcoming, and I would never go there on my own. Maybe its because it was so angled, dark and colourless that made it look less appealing in comparison to the red bricked windmill hill or the greener murdishaw!
