Ernst had apparently an unbelievable success with these variations. People were electrified, the ladies almost fainted while the audience went completely crazy. Today the variations don't have the same power any more, we are too much used to the highest level of virtuosity and musically we are much further developed than the audiences of the 1830ies and 1840ies, so they seem to us somewhat dull. In a live concert in the right atmosphere they can still develop their magic spell. I have listened to Repin in such a live version. Thomas Mathias plays them extremely well, with an astonishing virtuosity and facility. A pitty with the mask though that certainly diminishes the total effect of this (and any other) performance. I was very glad to hear this piece as it is not often performed. My congratulations to this young artist!
