Am syringe feeding my cat. It’s not as easy as this video shows and my cat is not nearly as accommodating, but wrapping them in a towel helps tremendously. For those of you going through this with your pets, I’m going through it too and my heart goes out to you.

My cat is refusing to eat and i had to ask my vet to prescribe me Mirataz and Hills A/D because she's so thin that she can't walk, i hope anybody going through the same thing can ask for these from their vet and have it help. My cat sadly has cancer and it will not cure her... it can only help her die in less pain

Thanks for your video! I just adopted a cat from a shelter and it’s my first time adopting and sadly I didn’t have a good experience. The place was really filthy and smelled terrible! But still I figured it would be better to adopt than to buy a kitty. And when I met him he was fine and they even neutered him before I brought him home, but now he was an URI and it’s so depressing! Especially because I have another cat that I’m trying to keep from catching his URI! They did say at the shelter that this was a possibility but now I have to deal with him not eating on top of everything else. He’s still drinking water, quite a lot of it. But not eating food. I even tried wet food, treats and Churu, but nothing. So now that I saw your video I’m going to try this! I’m also trying to not stress him out more than he already has been stressed out. He’s only been at my place for 1 week now…but he’s super friendly and sits on my lap and tries to snuggle with me! So I’m really hoping I can get him to eat in this way! Thanks again for your video Dr! You’re a godsend! 🙏🏼😻 And thanks to all other fur baby parents for your encouragement to not give up! 🥰

Forced feeding idea is questionable. Cats are very intuitive, if they refuse to eat maybe it is the reason.
@sunshine-mh3ii6 ай бұрын
stupid comment. cats stop eating when they’re sick or injured. it’s not questionable to try to keep your beloved family member alive, even if it means forced feeding.

Going to try this. My poor baby ate the cap of a white out correction tape and had to have surgery for an obstruction. She had the surgery on Friday, we’ve been at the vet everyday other than Saturday since last Tuesday (it’s Monday). We’re so much money in the hole right now and it’s just one thing after another. She has pneumonia now and we’re just trying to get her to eat. She’s on 5 medications including something for nausea, something to increase her appetite, antibiotics, everything. Praying she starts getting better😕 Praying for all your babies too❤

I just wanted to share what a lifesaver this video was for me at a really low point when I was bawling my eyes out and feeling so overwhelmed and alone. I really encourage others who are here not to give up and lose hope. In my case, our 13-year-old male Siberian cat had peed a big puddle outside his litterbox in a place he never had which I realize now was an alarm bell. I noticed for the rest of the day he proceeded to sit perched like a rotisserie chicken for an entire 18 hours without stretching out or moving from that spot and I started to really worry about him. I thought maybe he had kidney stones since he has a history of that so I took him to the emergency vet and they ran blood tests, a urinalysis, and x-rays and the only thing they could tell me was it appeared he was constipated. They loaded me up with meds and instructed me to give him Miralax water, but on day four of no eating and drinking on his own, very little peeing, and no pooing I was beyond stressed. That's when I found this video and began force-feeding him wet food mixed with Miralax. I wasn't able to get him to eat nearly enough and he was becoming increasingly weak, but it was enough to keep him alive for the 9 days it took for him to finally pass that stool that was stuck. In those 9 days, he lost 15% of his body weight and without me would have literally starved himself to death, but I kept this hope that if I could just help him pass that poo that he would want to start eating again and my prayers were answered. Immediately after it passed he was roaming the kitchen looking for food and he has turned a big corner ever since. It's been two weeks since he passed it and you would never know we went through this ordeal. He is eating on his own with gusto and is his active self again. With my vet's advice, I am mixing 1/4 teaspoon of Miralax in with his wet food each meal, in addition to the dry food he's eating. When I tried to stop for a while his poo became tiny hard pebbles again with less frequency so I think this is just his new normal to staying regular in his old age. I'm just thrilled to have a working solution when we were so close to putting him down. Keep up the faith. Going through this alone is not easy, but I want you to know your hard work and stress might just have a happy outcome like ours. ❤

Two months later and my 14-year-old cat is healthy, eating and drinking better than he has in years, regained 15% of the bodyweight he lost during this ordeal, and is more playful than we have seen him since he was a kitten. Our entire family can see a new spring in his step that he didn't have prior. Now we are realizing he may have been chronically constipated for years. Don't lose hope. There can be light at the end of this dark tunnel.

@@Snippets-of-MendiYaay! I’m so glad he’s doing so much better. I wonder if pumpkin (plain from can) could work as well, perhaps. And if it’s not already, move his water dish to a different area than his food (and litter). They are said to drink More when the water isn’t by the food. Anyway, what a relief that he has relief 🙃
@Snippets-of-Mendi6 ай бұрын
@@skittles2055 Yes, we keep his water separate from his litterbox. Since my comment six months ago he has had one additional episode after turning up his nose at his wet food for several days in a row (he didn't like the scent of that particular batch by the manufacturer) and then without us realizing it right away (during a busy weekend) he went back to not eating, drinking or moving. However, this time we knew the problem and solution. Luckily my husband wasn't traveling like he was with the first occurrence so we purchased a larger dog syringe and fed him together with one of us holding him swaddled in a wrapped towel and the other doing the feeding with watered-down wet food twice a day. That time he never lost weight and he finally passed the blockage after three or four days of our routine. Now he's doing awesome again. We have learned when he turns up his nose at his wet food dinner in the kitchen, he will often eat it later in the day if we move his rejected food next to his dry food feeder in the laundry room. Since this discovery he hasn't missed a single day of Miralax. I think he's senile and forgets about it in the kitchen and is more willing to eat it regardless of scent when he's faced with the choice between wet food or dry food. I know this is way more detail than you ever asked for, but I figure it doesn't hurt to share our successes for anyone else here looking for solutions.

My cat was diagnosed yesterday with the Feline Leukemia virus, and he’s still not eating or using the restroom. Such a strong and robust cat, now he's docile as a lamb. After 4 days outside, now this happens. No bite wounds, just an eye infection. This is blowing my mind but I'm thankful he came home! Just trying to figure this stuff out as I go along. The more and more I think I'm an expert in cats, the more and more I learn everyday! God bless your cats!!

All of the comments on this video have given me so much hope, and have made me feel less alone. My 1 year old cat had to go to the vet after 36 hours of not eating and acting lethargic. Turns out he had swallowed a piece of black thread and they had to open his intestines at 6 different spots. The first night back, he had appetite and was bright and alert, but today, he's lethargic again and won't eat. As per the vet, I am force feeding him, but it's difficult, especially with the medications I also have to give. All that to say that the video was helpful to me, but I would go as far as to say that the comments helped even more. Thank you.

I just went thru this with one of my cats, Miss Mittens. But, there is a caveat...Miss Mittens is feral. When I took her in, I had to decide whether to put her in the feral trap or the regular cat carrier. I decided to try the regular carrier, it was easier to handle. When I grabbed her, she didn't even struggle or hiss or fight. I know her well enough to know what "normal" is for her and this was NOT normal. The vet normally only takes walkins for emergencies...and they said this WAS an emergency after I explained what had happened. It was the fleas...and I knew she had a lot because she actually allowed me to flea comb her. Before anyone gets on me about "neglect"...she is a FERAL! Ever tried to put flea medication on a feral? She had anaemia from the fleas. But...the vet was able to get a Capstar in her mouth and...well...she wasn't putting up much of a fight. That night, she did something else unusual. The vet said her body temp was REALLY low...like he didn't know how low because it was below the range of the thermometer. That night, I picked her up, sat on a chair and covered her with a blanket to try to get her warmed back up and feeling better. She would slowly doze off, then start dreaming. Around dawn, she gave me a weird look and then she got down. It was a kind of "wait, what am I doing here again?" kind of look. Her follow-up appointment is going to be interesting. The vet is going to meet Miss Mittens the ANGRY Feral.

I have been using smaller 3 ml syringes, making making the food thinner with water to draw it up. Its a longer process but they gag much less with a smaller size syringe. Its ok to take breaks..

The hard part for me is not doing the actual feeding. It's having to do it in the first place. It just breaks my heart seeing my little friend starve himself. He knows I want him to eat, and he just licks the food a little bit and takes a single bite, and then he looks at me with sad eyes, like he's saying "See. I did that for you. Am I a sweet cat now?". Yes, Bruce. You are a VERY sweet cat, but now I have to force you to eat a proper meal, so we can be together for some more years.
