2016 was also built in December 2014, but not delivered to MBTA property until mid-September 2015, same as 2014. 2016 was accepted for service on October 13th of that year. As of October 2015, 36 of 40 units were in service. 2015 was built in December 2014 and not delivered to MBTA until September 2, 2015. It was accepted for service 27 days later on September 29th. Somebody said that they rode behind a very clean and brand-new 2015 on the Haverhill line back home from work on 10/1/15. 2000’s delivery was delayed until September 27, 2015 due to part shortages at the factory in boise, idaho and mpi working with MBTA to fix problems such as reliability issues and mechanical issues with locomotives already delivered and in-service, meaning report the problems to the manufacturer and for them to send parts to MBTA to fix them at boston engine terminal. It was also unpainted as being one of three test units completed in February 2014, with 2001 the only one painted in MBTA colors and the only one to officially reach MBTA property in April of that year. It took a while to paint it, then inspect it heavily from undercarriage to top cab to make sure everything was manufactured and installed in the right place or properly. 2000 finally entered service on October 20, 2015. The other two were 2001 and 2003, of which the 2003 wasn’t painted. 2011’s delivery was delayed until November 26, 2015 same reason as for the delay in shipping the 2000 to Boston. 2011 entered service on December 19, 2015, just 13 days shy of the new year, finally completing the 40-unit order. 2000 and 2011 were seen testing in erie on the test track in April 2014 not painted in MBTA colors. 2003’s delivery was delayed to early April of 2015 due to painting, inspections of the unit and part shortages at mpi’s boise facility. It was completed in February 2014, but not released to MBTA and instead sent to erie, pennsylvania to run up and down the test track before shipping up to Boston for further testing on real MBTA commuter rail tracks. mpi was awarded a contract from the MBTA to build the 40 new locomotives in January 2011, for US$222 million.

As of November 2024, the MBTA owned 109 locomotives. Of these, 87 were in active passenger service. Ten were undergoing rebuild, seven either in or awaiting repairs and five retired and awaiting disposition. 1001 has been restored but it’s supposed to be retired and it barely escaped the scrap heap and MBTA announced it would be cosmetically and extensively restored back to operating status after sitting dead in Rochester, MA on an unused rail line down near the cape since 2015-16 and it’s now called a Rolling Stock Solutions (RSTX) F40PH-4C and the body is painted in all grey. 1001 is back in action ladies and gentlemen. 😊 It’s been brought back to life from the scrap heap.

15:37, my favorite geep on the entire MBTA roster, 1133. The reason is I like 1133’s decent sounding horn. My other favorite 1100 on the roster is 1124 because it’s horn sounds like f40 1031. Love those classic gp40 power the T still has which is the oldest power on the system built by general motors diesel in 1973-75 and 50+ years old. The T still runs equipment built in the 1970s and hasn’t been upgraded since. But I guess that these oldies are being refurbished and will be sticking around for a little longer.

But is currently being overhauled by mpi in erie, pennsylvania and being converted to f40ph-3c specifications. 2014 was 5 years old and 1072 was 32 years old in 2020. mpi was the idaho-based locomotive manufacturer that built the 40 hsp46s in 2013-14 for MBTA under a $240 million contract awarded in January 2011. general motors’ electro motive division built the f40ph-2cs and f40phm-2cs brand-new in two batches which included 25 that were put into service in 1987-88 and another 12 that joined the MBTA’s fleet in 1991.

1:05, Wow, the BRAND-NEW and ORIGINAL F40s together as a doubleheader, nice. 👍👍👍 New locos are always tested on a doubleheader when entering revenue because of the risk of mechanical failure after not operating for a long time.
