If you mean that St. Gregory Palamas is not a “Scriptural Christian” - a lover of the Holy Bible - I would urge you to read his Homilies (Sermons), and see just how Scriptural he is. mountthabor.com/products/saint-gregory-palamas-the-homilies

Hi I am a Christian Orthodox and I feel truly blessed to be one. There is however one thing that I am not sure about the way the Orthodox church explains the Bible. They say that in Genesis 6, the giants were the children of the descendants of Seth with the daughters of Cain. If both parents were mere human how did the give birth to giants?

And I ask you because one "inaccuracy" is sometimes followed by a second one.

Dear @ReelNut, I would read St. John Chrysostom's commentary on Genesis. He is a wonderful and trustworthy interpreter of Holy Scripture.

The way St. Gregory of Nyssa states the Spirit proceeding through the Son seems to imply a dependence of proceeding on begetting. Are there any patristic sources that discuss the Son being begotten through the Spirit? It seems like the two modes of generation should be mutually dependent or completely independent for equality to exist in the Trinity. Thanks and God bless!
@TheMTPAcademyАй бұрын
St. Gregory simply wishes to give us a perspective from which the distinctiveness of the Son and Word of God as “Only-begotten” may be perceived. Hence, Nyssa maintains that the distinctive characteristic of the Logos alone is that His hypostasis is produced directly from God the Father. Making this mutual or reciprocal between the Logos and the Spirit would thus defeat Nyssa’s purpose. There are no Patristic sources which, so far as I am aware, discuss the generation of the Son through the Spirit. But the Fathers do say that the Spirit “rests” eternally in the Son. Hope this helps. Thank you for your support!

Yes @RaphaelFoshay, dianoia is a richer concept even in philosophy. But note that it is sometimes used synonymously with nous in the theology of the Fathers.

Sincere thanks, Professor Veniamin. As a cradle Anglican I was formed by Cranmerian English and the KJV and it is a great grief to see what the Anglicans have done with that heritage. However, since becoming an Orthodox convert in 1987, it is long since an issue for me. A question: Can you recommend an English translation of the Liturgy of St Basil. I would be happy to be mistaken, but the OUP edition you mention seems no longer in print. I would be looking for a priest's edition. Thank you, Hieromonk Raphael.
@TheMTPAcademy4 ай бұрын
Yes indeed, Fr. Raphael, I understand. Frankly, I am not aware of a better translation than that of the Monastery. But as you say, it is now out of print, which is a great source of grief to me personally. In our own small way, I am hoping to promote a greater sensitivity to all things ecclesiastical, particularly pertaining to the spiritual life of the Church.
