It's a nice tent. This is how a backpacking tent should be. Classic design. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. That said, I've come to prefer shelter setups that require any like zero set up time whatsoever, because the kind of camping that I do requires me to be on my watch carefully, and get out the area if needs require. I dislike pegging down on any land that is not mine.

I went on a bear hunt a few weeks ago. We set up on top of an exposed mountain/hilltop. We had wave after wave of humid, cold, wind driven, rain from off the Pacific that night. I set it up opposite the wind using two full length x-c ski poles in those sleeves (worked great) and I laid slash poles around the cape perimeter to block wind. It stayed 95% dry; just a tad of wetness below the peak. Thank goodness for wool blankets -ha I may figure out a configuration using a military poncho to solve the peak wetness. I'm impressed with how it performed. If wind switched I would block the entrance with the mil poncho.

Winds change directions all of the time, especially at night and during storms. That lean-to is MUCH too small and you'll wake-up soaked. Thaat' very dangerous if it's colder than about 60F degrees and windy. You're still on the ground, with the water, mud, snow, roots, thorns, stones, brush, steep hillsides, bugs, snakes etc. give me a 1 lb net hammock, 1.5 lbs of XL size reflective tyvek bivy and 1/2 lb of plastic "envelope" around the bivy and I'll sleep find in just cammies, down to 40F, in wind and rain. It wont all fit in a gallon can, but it's not 2 gallon sized, either. 3 lbs is nothing and it doesn't take much in the way of bulk or weight to let you handle bugs, 100F, 20F, etc.

Cheers from Ukraine. You've got a nice loadout but please, if you really care about saving a life in an emergency situation - ditch that weird looking tourniquet and get something TCCC-approved (ideally, CAT gen 7 as it's the easiest one to apply). It's great to see you've considered to have such an item for quick access though.

@@awayinthewilderness4319 That is true. I have about 60 acres and I mow down some nice places in it where its level. I have set up 1 inch thick, 3 ft. across, 17 inch deep fire rings in them. Like a private camp ground. Some are quite a distance from my house and I already live in the middle of nowhere. Anyone walking through the woods would have to know they just entered someones private property. Its really nice even though I use a tractor with a brush hog to mow it.

One thing you omit that no true woodsman would forget is a First Aid Kit. Why is that?
@awayinthewilderness4319

@@jeffheigl1850 I disagree that no "true woodsmen" would leave that out. There are teachers that I know who don't always carry a designated fak in their pack. Certain things can be improvised. I do carry one in most packs. This specific pack is more of a close to the car kit as I stated in the video, so I just didn't think it was absolutely necessary. @@awayinthewilderness4319 Teachers? Let me give you my bona fides... My first back packing trip was into the the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Dad carried the camp, Ma carried me. That was 71 years ago. My Grandfather (b, 1878 d. 1978) hunted and trapped the Georgian bay region of Quebec and Ontario before becoming a hunting and fishing guide of notables including Dwight Eisenhower, and Norman Maclean (who became a lifelong friend)' and others. These Men were Woodsmen, not 'teachers'. They logged in the days of the misery whip.. My Brother, who photographed for Nat Geo in places most dream about before passing, said it best...."Give someone a camera, dress him in the right clothes, and use words like 'bush', and 'survival' and they become experts." THESE are the people that gave me more Wisdom than some self proclaimed 'teacher'. Myself? I daresay I've logged more miles afoot and afloat than most of these youtubers, That can make a spark with a bow and drill, and talk about being prepared for 'what if?' Yeah 'what if you get injured? But I digress. One of the un-intended but vital lessons that they instilled in me was being prepared for the inevitable. I saw first hand wounds from cutting instruments, fishhooks, broken bones, and sprains. These Men were prepared for it. Improvisation is for the un-prepared.

@@awayinthewilderness4319 Teachers??? Let me give you my bona fides.... My first overnight backpacking trip was 70 years ago, into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Dad carried the camp and Mom carried me. My paternal Grandfather (b. 1878 d. 1978) Was a hunter and trapper throughout northern Manitoba and Ontario. When He 'retired', He became a guide in Northern Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan. Among the notables he fished with were Dwight Eisenhower, Norman Maclean, and Ted Trueblood. My Grandmother was Metis with all the knowledge of Her fore bears. These were my inspiration and my mentors. Now, between hunting, fishing, and general camp chores, I saw many times where blisters, cuts, even a broken bone (mine). Each and every time a First Aid Kit was used, not some improvisation. I've backpacked on the North Country Trail, Isle Royale, and Parts of the Continental Divide Trail, I've canoed the Boundary Waters and the Quetico. Several rivers. The Goulais, the Spanish, and the French. Many, many times I've treated injuries of others simply because they though they didn't need a First Aid Kit. Stomach issues are a big one, along with burns, splinters, cuts, and sprains. So let me ask you this... Why in the world would a 'teacher' not teach preparedness and be an example? Or is all that talk about being prepared just talk? So don't confuse the majority of KZbinrs with actual Woodsmen. Most have never gotten further than a 40 from a paved road, but they can use a Bow and drill, and hang a tarp.
