Is there an alternative to the Sal suds? I get suds on the floor with an error message. Every comment with this question has no answer.

i was also amazed about the Fountain Pen. The fountain pen is very important. Here in Baden-Württemberg, the teacher told us to bring my child with us to the Schreibwarengeschäft to choose here pen. We went to Galeria Kaufhof where you can try all the fountain pens. It is like choosing my daughter's 'WAND' . she was very happy and excited to choose which one is the right one for her. It is actually tricky to use the fountain pen and i am happy that they are using fountain pen when they are doing DIKTAT

the last item, the laundry thing, in Maryland in the early 80s we had the same exact thing you showed, out in our backyard for our laundry to hang dry. So maybe that is a regional US difference more so than US versus Germany?

Austrian from Salzburg here. Krampus is the companion of St. Nicholas (Nikolaus), what you saw were technically "Perchten", but also people here mix that up and basically don't care because thats not the point. The "brooms" with which they beat people are literally actual cow (sometimes goat) tails. When I grew up in the 90s and to this day in the villages (and I have been there last year with my kids, 11 and 13 at the time), there were no fences or anything, Krampus/Perchten run freely through the audience. So Austria is different from Germany in that respect apparently. Also and more importantly Krampus as the companion comes with St. Nicholas into your family home(!) where kids would sing songs or recite a poem for St. Nicholas, who has a "golden book", where miraculously all sins and failures plus good sides of the kids are be listed (by the parents). If you have been REALLy bad, Krampus, who is present all the time, making noises sometimes and threatening you with his "Rute" (twig), is supposed to punish the naughty children - or take you with him to hell, which actually happened to my mother when she was like 7 years old (after a few minutes they brought her back though). The good children though (i.e., all children present) would get nuts, oranges and lots of candy in a bag. This tradition continues until today, although without the "taking-the-kids-with-them" part.

I'm very interested in the topics of self-reliance and confidence in kids, so thanks for this video. What I'd really like to know, however, is how this emphasis on self[reliance carries through into adult life. Could one say that German adults are generally more autonomous and confident than their European counterparts? Or, what happens to this sense of independence in later life? Very curious.

8:39 shopping carts "Pfand" - you need to imagine how it was without in Germany 🤯🙊🙉 Remember - MANY GERMANS WALK to go shopping (i would estimate roughly 50% dont use a car) So, what did people do?! They took the cart home with their heavy shopping and didnt return them at all!! You were seeing them all over town! And drunk 16year olds would throw them into rivers and gardens and everything. So this was a real issue!! Some stores even added what your fellons get around their feet when "grounded by court"?! So an Alarm sounds when you cross a certain geospacial border, like the parking lot perimeter 😮 The "Pfand" of 1€/50ct for each kart lowered that problem signifficantly. Not for 100% but for like 95+% 😅

I just ordered castle soap and glycerin from Amazon a while back. my mom always bought Mr, Bubble for me and younger sister when we took a bath when we were 5 or 6 years old. I brought a box of scented oils, and fruit scents from Amazon last year. I don't have glass jars. I ohave a large orange juice empty bottle . pinterst has a list, but once u get to the ingredients, u just don't want to make it . I love taking a hot shower, but Girl a woman has to take a spa day and relax, with a warm bubble bath, and that glass a wine, 😊

I’m thinking just pouring Sals Suds into the washer would be much less work, mess and energy So 2 1/4c Sals diluted into 6c salt water and 1/3c of that per load. I’m gonna do some math, ignoring the salt!

I like your views. I was raised a free range kid in the French countryside, and I'm appalled by the current norms that, it seems to me, deny them any autonomy (and even freedom and privacy), and I indeed don't see how you can become a self-reliant (as you say) adult if you aren't left to deal with issues and make decisions by yourself as a child. I thought that there was nobody left willing to not helicopter their children. From what you say, it seems to me that this model of child raising is much more commonly used in Germany than here in France. And that it's theorized and actually presented as a model to parents (not the case over here.)

sorry for the late comment - but Christmas time comes again yet 🙂. I think there are some funny mingling things going on here with American and German traditions. The German name Claus or Klaus has it's origin on Nikolaus => Sankt Nikolaus or Santa Claus. This is celebrated in Germany on December 6th. In some areas Sankt Nikolaus has indeed a helper, usually called Knecht Ruprecht. In older traditions this guy was really the "evil" part of the 2 and scared the kids if they did not follow the parents in the past year. The Christkind is in my memories without "gender" and brings the gifts to all (not only to the kids ;-)). The Christkind (little Christ) does not have a helper like Santa Claus in Germany but does all the work by itselfs. In my child memories 24th december evening was handled in the way that the living room was closed/locked and all windows covered for a few days. "Someone" (;-)) prepared and decorated the christmas tree during this time, prepared the gifts under and around the tree, decorated the table of the living room with special and individual christmas plates with some cookies, sweets, nuts, fruits and stuff like this. After the special church service (Christmette) when all people were back home the secret started and one of the parents "checked" in the living room whether Christkind had done his job already ;-). And then the Christmas bell was ringing and everyone could enter the decorated living room 🙂, searching the gifts, maybe singing and/or playing christmas tunes and songs and the unwrapping started.

Wonderful ! So glad that you are experiencing life as it should be .... so much more about WE THE PEOPLE (than about the controller$$$$$$ - and THEIR WANTS AND DEMANDS). I lived a fantastich 10 years in Germany while with the USAF (though I always lived off-base), and I wanted to stay, and eventually retire there - but President Reagan, and the General I worked for - and his boss, had other ideas ... so off to DC we went. Everytime I hear the brain-dead grunt 'USA-USA-USA' - - - it reminds me of the bad direction people like tr... have taken the US ... down, Down, DOWN ... and so, depending on the 2024 election, who knows ..... I just may, finally, return 'HOME' to Deutschland ... or England (as I'm about 'half-half' genealogically / DNA-wise). Anyway - THANKS for the great, up-beat, inspiring - AND INFORMATIVE video. You've done yourselves proud ! Tcheuss ! (Franz ... back in the USA - but happily & proudly driving a Benz !; though the 2nd car is a Towncar).

Your podcasts are always informative and enjoyable. Would it be possible to avoid using any German words? By the time I try to figure out what was just said you've already gone on to the next sentence. It's commendable that you are learning German, but it can be confusing to the English-speaking listener.
