Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KZbin videos have really come a long way in the last 20 years (give or take) but it is harder to do than a lot of people realize in order to keep the quality up and content interesting.

Can anyone tell me which issue of guitar world this is from?

Ugh... I know it's old but these comments/questions are maddening... the tuning is standard drop D, just like the rest of this album (Ascendency). Matt's playing an epiphone not a Gibson. Corey isn't using EMG's which is why his tone is fuzzier than Matt's. No, Corey's intro riff is not impossible, practice more than 20 minutes a day and you'll realize it's pretty easy (not meant as a diss to the band AT ALL). Corey is only palm muting the notes on the low E(D) in the intro riff. It's called "galloping" and it's not "insanely hard". Picking a "best" album is subjective, Crusade sucks though and Ascendancy is my favorite in regards to the guitar work. Yes, the last riff is from "Ascendancy", they probably made vids for both that day and whoever edited fucked up. Ok, 80% of these comments have been answered, explained or put to rest now.

It came out 2005, right around the time when the whole melodic metalcore thing came into play. Before As i lay dying were even that established. Matt is definitely inspired by death metal, As i lay dying's melodies in guitar riffs are so alike those of swedish death metal bands. Metalcore = Swedish death metal + breakdowns. Trivium, AILD etc. basically made this melodic style popular in America. If these FEW bands never introduced these melodies, i doubt BVB and AA etc. would even exist.
