would it be possible to just figure a way to have some kind of nvme ribbon cable to just move the nvme 2280 outside the steam deck and figure a way to enclose it in the center outside the steam deck. that would keep it from issues from overheating and still be able to have the nvme technically internally connected

I think the ssd should get warm while downloading and the battery when executing the game ( or charging) so you may try not to do those things at the same time. That is assuming heat comes with writting, not reading, in SSD. I think that is the case, but i am not sure.
@dexasarcade5 күн бұрын
SteamOS doesn't download and run games at the same time so that issue shouldn't occur.

I worked on repairing laptops before, and my friend has an alienware laptop top end and broken beyond repair in under a year.. laptops is not invincible to heat.. Also reading the "bug reports" on steam and reddit.. there is an issue to the unfortunate one who have short battery life span.. And by that with the inclusion of more heat will make the battery even shorter life span.. Sure, i agree to the guy where "modding" is modding.. and it's up to you and your steamdeck. But i suggest against doing so if you want to preserve it rather than juicing it all out. If you really want to have bigger storage, either stream your pc/laptop to your steamdeck or get an M.2/SATA adapter/dock to type C Gen2, which is safer and better Or just backup your games The video is informative but i still think the tutorial video on the first one should really clarify the impact. Safe gaming.

good info. Randomly came across your channel. As you're a smaller channel hope you dont mind the feedback. But I believe you'd benefit heavily by pre speeding up your videos about 1.5x. There's a lot of long pauses and you're sort of a slow speaker so I had to watch at 1.75x speed which actually sounded mostly more natural to hear. But good stuff with solid reasoning.

Not at all, I appreciate the feedback. I only speak slower when I'm off the cuff as I'm formulating my words while I speak. I'll get better as time goes along. And if it doesn't and people still find it slow, I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future. Thanks a lot.

What's the difference between the 2280 and the small form ssd?
@lushlagoonbomb9019 күн бұрын
Usually 2280 is more mainstream meaning cheaper and bigger storage options compare to the smaller ssd.
@dexasarcade8 күн бұрын
They're the same just one is longer than the other. Because the smaller one is new the maximum amount of space you can get it in is 2TB. While the 2280 is widely available upto 8TB.
@Chuck_vs._The_Comment_Section6 күн бұрын
The 2280s are larger and therefore offer more space for storage chips (up to 8 TB) and a DRAM cache. Furthermore, they are cheaper. The 2230s, on the other hand, are smaller, therefore offer less space for storage chips (up to 2 TB) and are usually not equipped with a DRAM cache. In addition, they are more expensive. That’s about it.
@systim306 күн бұрын
@Chuck_vs._The_Comment_Section so there is none. I have two 2230 ssds , 1 is 1tb the other 2tb. Both have dram cache as well. So unless you need higher than 2tb... there's no point.
@Stoney3K3 күн бұрын
@@Chuck_vs._The_Comment_Section An 8TB 2280 is literally just 4 2230 2TB's stuck together on a single board. So, just because you have more physical space, it means more disk space.
@Paradigmfusion10 күн бұрын
Also when going to a 2280, stick with the slower speed drives (5gb/s) over the 7.5gb/s as they run much cooler and there is no performance difference between the two. Truth be told you could pop in a gen 3 NVME SSD and performance wise it would be about the same. Not to mention the sloer ones are generally a bit cheaper too
@dexasarcade10 күн бұрын
Actually I think it works better the other way around. I don't think the Steam Deck can reach the theoretical maximum of Gen 4 drives so it's more likely that it'll run cooler than Gen 3.

Thank you everyone who's supported and liked the video so far. It's been by far my most wide reaching video and I'm so thankful. I've seen comments regarding the heat from the SSD reaching the battery. Personally, I think the heat tolerances should be fine however, I realise these concerns are valid and I'd rather be safe than wrong. especially if others are performing this tutorial. Towards that end, I'll going to make a short follow up video in 2 or 3 days and link it in this video when it's done. Thanks to the suggestion from @mustanggd3734 I'm going to add a fibreglass tape to the battery where the SSD is placed. That should alleviate any concerns about the heat reaching the battery and not cause the SSD to bulge through the real panel. In a month, I'll post a follow up video showing how the steam deck is faring, battery and so forth. Again thanks everyone look forward to more.

@Invid7213 күн бұрын
Placing the second hottest component in the Steam Deck (SSD) on the most heat sensitive component (battery) is a recipe for disaster. Also, the last thing you want is a thermal pad between them to efficiently conduct heat. If anything you should be using some plastic card stock to insulate the battery from the heat. Even if the battery doesn't get hot enough to catastrophically fail the heat will make it degrade much faster. Heat is the enemy of lithium chemistry batteries.
@Nodster13 күн бұрын
Not just me that heard "I put thermal pad on the back of the nvme so that will help it offset any heat that comes up off the battery" then. 🤦

@dexasarcadeАй бұрын
In the context of this video, it's just to unlock the full potential of an expensive TV someone has bought. Personally, if you feel happy with 30 FPS. That's great. You do you. Everyone has their own preference and their own way to game. There's no right way or wrong way. I personally can tell the difference so I prefer 60. If you prefer 30 then there are options for you as well. I don't like to gatekeep, anything that brings people in is a plus. All I would say is if you get a chance to try something at 60 or 120 do so, you might like it. If it doesn't make a difference to you and as long as you enjoy the game, that's far more important in my opinion.
@dany.alejandrotorresАй бұрын
@@dexasarcade agree with you but 30fps for me it's okay but some games can't be played on 60fps because can break the game I mean bugs can happen on those games that can only be played on 30fps they're not programmed to be played on 60fps.
