There's some beautifully obscure poetry in this piece. I was always under the impression the subject was The Troubles in Northern Ireland, but the lyrics are really hard to decipher. Can anyone offer an explanation of them?

One of the finest bands of the 80s/90s! “Chemicrazy” is a fantastic album. That Petrol Emotion should have been huge. But, some artists are just too good and original to appeal to the mainstream.. 😢

Of all the spin-off bands from TPE, these are definitely the best.

How did they fail to be a comercial success. Possibly, they became a bit political at a very sensitive time in ireland, thereby polarising opinions. No doubt though, they were a magnificent band.

Today is my sixtieth birthday. I spent it in Derry. If you have never visited then please do. There is a past. It’s visible. In the murals and the history. There is a present, in the wit, the good humour and the razor sharp wit of its every day citizens. But it is much more than that. This band, along with their iconic Undertones genesis, brought a lifeblood to a border town just across from Inishowen, the two for me are intertwined…the city and the countryside, and that sense of never being sure, really sure, of why there may be conflict or battlegrounds, was made somewhat secure by knowing there was love. Cos we realised the border was man made by bureaucrats many years ago. Today, and looking forward, listening to That Petrol Emotions music reflects hope. A hope for all of our tomorrows. Ahead of their time A Terrible Beauty might just be revisited and changed, by listening to our poets, scholars, and musicians….love, and love long with TPE.

I love this album so much. This single should have been massive, naturally... I suspect it might have been, if it had come out a few years later, once Britpop hit its stride. Thanks for the info about Anima Rising! I'm off to check it out.

I'm so pleased that footage of that gig exists,it was one of their farewell concerts and it was fantastic. I'd forgotten about the guy with the angle grinder showering the place with sparks. Crowd were begging the band not to split up. The live CD from this night and the Dublin night is also superb. What a group!

This was so good. Anyone listening to this now for the first time would have to be impressed by how timeless this 30 year old song is. And those who heard it in 1988 were likewise impressed.
Former Undertones That petrol Emotion represents 80´s post punk enery with energetic live performances. Cellophane is a non typical song in irish tradition. To get a full picture you should listen to early Peel Sessions, Babble, and the their live 7inch SWAMP.

Emailed the lyrics to a guy I had a crush on waaaaay back when. Personified how I felt about him. Totally smitten. He was is a band (local), and think he was jealous when he heard how great these guys were and how great the lyrics were. Needless to say, he was not impressed. I really adored Steve Macks voice the first time hearing it. Then I saw him and fell harder. He's darling.
