Dale, thanks for sharing!! If kit, gear, and accessories are too pricey...might I suggest building your own. Sure some of the items you mentioned might not be buildable in your garage, but some can. A bat-wing awning sounds wonderful, but that is a lot of quid for just one item. I heard you say you did not want the kiddos to bash into tent poles, but you can customise a basic tarp into an effective awning with poles and guy-lines for a song and a dance. Here are some ideas from my last truck mtnmanblog.blogspot.com/search?q=tahoe . I do not live in the Uk, and an older Chevy Tahoe is a lot more affordable over here than a Landrover, but you use what you can get. Best success!!

Thinking about your comment re. booking into a cheap hotel / B&B when the weather's bad, that's another advantage of the Jackary. You can take it with you into the hotel and charge it up overnight!

The biggest problem with a rooftop tent is the weight distribution. That's a lot of weight, quite high up. Having said that, I've not seen any of your other vids, so don't know if that's a concern for where you drive. Also, in regards to gullwing windows, I will be making an aluminium one to go on the drivers side of my D1. Should be very cheap and easy to make one and by only doing the drivers side, it's not going to block vision.

Hi Dale, just came across this vlog. Excellent advice that I needed. I have always enjoyed backpacking & being outdoors. I recently acquired a vehicle i want to overland with. I must say that it gets a bit overwhelming with needs and cost to prepare & kit out a vehicle. I really appreciate yours & followers input. I'm now more encouraged to get the basics & get out there. Just subscribed & looking forward to following your build and adventures! Thank you.....Bob V

To number 4: I do "overlanding" in an very cheep basic setup. I just bring a second Battery..if the first is almost flat (while a period of not driving) i change them and after driving again for a while and the second one is charged again i switch the first one back in the car. And also if i used all the electricity from the first one i use the second one to start the car :) works out super for me ...

@@matschmoon Thanks for the comment. You raise a good point. I am looking at suspension options only because I’m not sure the standard set up will be okay with all the extra weight I’ll be adding. For a light set up for one or two people I reckon the standard suspension is fine.

Glad you acknowledged it won't be fit for purpose until pipework inside engine bay is improved,do understand this Will only be suitable for wading if you raise the 3 breathers under the bonnet and only drastically cut down on dust if you fit a cyclone filter on the top unless you are completely solo driving and then still a strong chance of still sucking up lots of dust. Raised intakes always look good though

Yes they definitely look good, I had a similar set on a 90, however for 99% of "overlanding" even off roading they won't be needed especially with a defender being fairly high of the ground compared to other vehicles, money would be better spent elsewhere on the build. Regarding them for a hi lift jack point, there are hi lift points front and rear of the vehicle built in. Similar with your raised air intake, recent trip I done to Morocco half the vehicles had them half didn't,when air filters where blown out same volume of dust came out, just easier and cheaper to carry a spare

Great video and approach to overlanding! Kinda like me! Have a 110HT 200tdi since 24 years! Have a 2nd battery setup and a simple (10min removable) build inside! If you going for a rooftop tent my advice would be to go for an Autohome or James Baroud! In my opinion this is the gold standard! Easy to set up, stable in the wind, bedding inside, repairable, not as heavy as the aluminium ones - holds its value! Best regard from Austria🤘

People who say "Buy a Toyota" usually have never owned a Defender. Stick with the best 4x4xfar... Toyotas break too, and a lot more often that the owners care to admit. Yeah, go simple and love the chart, it's right, too many go into a "I want the best overlander vehicle on the planet" and it costs them near £20,000 (probably plus the vehicle), when they could go for the simpler option and it works, There are families that have gone around the world with roof tents, Regarding the split charge system or power bank, I'd have gone for the split charge, much cheaper and more efficient than a powerbank and simpple t oinstall, you don't need lithium and a DC inverter charger for general use, The only time I would consider a DC inverter charger is for a trailer as volt drop is too much for proper charging levels. again there is too much false information going about on the internet by people who sell expensive kit. Awnings are a bit of a topic, since the 270°'s have become popular, the basics are good value, I link one to a quick errect for extra space and so the poles are not a problem. it works well. I'm a bit old school, love paper maps and there is just something about opening it up on the table or bonnet! All I really need is a GPS for back up and emergency planning. Storage, In my experience it's a simple criteria, everyday items by the door/opening, least accessible needs to be things like the service kit which doesn't need to come out every day or week. So for a 110, get the drawer and the lift up lid storage box, that box is the place for tools and bits like oils etc... or in a side locker. Keep recovery gear in a central place that can be accessed from either side and preferably front ( edit: Bonnet bag is good for this!), so not just the rear door, as discussions always put up the "what if?" scenario and people come out with things like "I'll just have 2!" which isn't really a good plan... just make the one accessible. Also on storage, fuel is a thing to discuss, do you need it and where do you keep it? There are different laws in different countries about additional fuel and a lot of ferry companies just won't allow cans on board. So how do you get around that if you need a secondary fuel for cooking? I do like the rear side locker, there is also a 40L water tank for the area above the exhaust too. I will probably make a locker for that area. I would lastly say, keep everything within the confinds of the vehicle, except things like recovery boards and some other necessary things that need to be outside (wet/smelly items!) Good video! 😀

Great advice. The best way to find out what you need and don't need is just to get out and travel. I live in Australia and so many vehicles are kitted out to the max, but they quickly reach their payload capacity. Don't fall for the marketing trap thinking you need everything to head out. You can travel the world in a Corolla. Your set-up will change over time. You'll buy things and never use them. If I can give advice, before buying something, see if you can go without, then borrow, then buy.

Love this, great to see a realistic mindset, sick of seeing KZbinrs etc who are spending a fortune on "stuff". Ex army here, and I agree with the expenses to comfort ratio. When I take mine out I usually grab a massive handfull of the wooden knives and forks from the food to go checkouts then when they're finished they end up on the fire it's a win win ha. It's more fun trying to budget it right down, outdoor life is about having the bare essentials, my 110 set up I built a storage system with folding doors in the boot, and space enough for 2 of those under bed style boxes, one for food one for tools and enough room for an inflatable kayak.
