Thanks for this info! But I ran into an odd problem: When I added the ham frequency 7.250 to the existing non-ham channels already programmed into this 550 (unit works fine on those existing channels with the 910 autotuner) my new channel will receive, but it won't transmit even though it let me add the channel for both TX and RX. If I hit the mic button it shows infinity SWR and the panel light dims like it's drawing a lot of current. But no output, and the auto-tuner won't activate if I hit the tune button or the mic button. Any idea what's going on? Thanks de WA6HAS

I have one of the Mad Dog 80 coils, I haven't used mine yet, I'm waiting for some bits to make a secure mount for it, I also have a 17.5' telescopic whip for it, but was wondering how long the military whip is that you have used on your set up.
@vk2lq
@vk2lq Жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your question the tactical whip is about 2.7 meters in length and very solid, to shorten the length, just fold a section/s down as required and strap it with the velcro strap in place as required, Marty has made a great looking coils for both 40 and the 80- meter, I think the 80 would be the choice myself, Now depending on the coil thread version will depend if the Military whip will fit as its a 3/8 24 thread, I am currently considering purchasing the 80 meter coil from the MAD DOG LOL Marty to do a video on 73's cheers for now
@bitemykrank1970
@bitemykrank1970 Жыл бұрын
@@vk2lq I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of Marty's coils, they look better in person than they do on the website and in the video's of them being used. VERY WELL MADE. I bought the 80M so the threads are 10mm. My Chinese made steel whip uses an adaptor on the bottom and its also 10mm. I have a one piece 102" stainless from back in my 27Mhz CB days, only problem is I have NO IDEA what it's thread is, it MIGHT be 3/8-24, as a guess, it's got an adaptor on it to make the fitment thread for CB antenna bases of old, I think that thread is 5/16-24 or something like it. The thread on the actual antenna is male not female, so I need a 3/8-24 to 10mm adaptor, which seems impossible to find via Google searching, but I have seen people using the 102" stainless on these type of coils with good success. I'm only licenced to down 40m for now, so the 17.5 foot is a bit long for my needs, but apparently together with the coil it will get down to 80m quite easily. It seems everytime I buy an item to try an antenna setup , I have to buy another item to make that first one work....then another, then another and so on....

Did you check the setup on other bands as well? Does it work on 40, 20, 10 m, and possibly other bands by moving the contact on the coil? Or do you have to remove one coil for that? Although it probably won't be a great performer on 160 m, I'd be curious how it would work there, or if it'd work at all.
@vk2lq
@vk2lq Жыл бұрын
This antenna works on all bands but only uses a single coil in the vertical array 40 to 10 meters. i tried adding 2 coils to see if 80 meters was possible coil as shown. With contacts into NEW ZEALAND, I believe it may also do 2/70. I have not tried it for 160. This is a great alround antenna, and i have tested it on the WARC bands. I would love some details on your gamma, I have an old 11m 3el Yagi I have thought about trimming down for 10m, or perhaps using a tuner with so I can still use it on 11m if I wish, but I have lost the gamma match for it. If you could provide some measurements and possibly some video of your construction, it would be great. I have only found one decent video on a gamma build on KZbin, and the guy wasn't speaking english, the video was still good, but not understanding Tagalog meant it was difficult to follow the instructions. Keep up the good work.

@@vk2lq It may be the materials you used to build it. I have had 2 beams in my time, years ago on 11m, a 3el Yagi and 2el Delta V, both were gamma matched. The matches were both made with the centre core of RG213 inside an aluminium tube, I have NO IDEA if this is the way they should be or not, but I haven't seen one done the way you did yours. I cannot find the video I found on KZbin that showed the guy making one from start to finish, but he too used the inner core of coax as the capacitor section. I don't know enough about them to say any further on the design, trial and error is really all we as builder's have to work with, unless you enjoy reading HIGHLY technical books about it....I'm not smart enough for that kind of shit, I just go with what other's have done and hope for the best. It seems to work for J-Poles at least....this build video has some information on them, if your interested in continuing the experiments with the gamma -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/fInYmZaem6lgopI Another idea is a hairpin match, I was thinking of trying this for my 3el, as they seems a bit easier to build than a gamma

I wish I had a 4 element beam for 10m, I could build one easy enough, but I guarantee my neighbours would win and I would have to take it down. I do OK with a 5ft whip on my van with 50-80w output or so, but it means I have to be in the van to use it.....a nice tower and beam would be wonderful, keep experimenting and when you get it to a beam that fits inside your pocket, maybe I could make one the neighbours might not see....invisible is what I really need. Yours seems to work nicely though, noticeable jump on the S-Meter when you changed antenna's. Without guy's like you making and testing stuff, how will we know if it does or doesn't work? It might be last video you intend to make, but you got a new sub anyway.....nice effort so far. I intend to look at a few of your other video's tomorrow.
@vk2lq
@vk2lq Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I found I don't get enough views or likes to spend hours putting these together., you can manage a 10 m 3 element on a 3.5-meter boom very short, i am doing a 3 or element beam tomorrow for 20 meters but will not be doing a video. Everything is just a ready, had some good results on a shortened 2,5 meters 2 element for 20 so i am hoping the 3or 4 element will work quit well.
