Just a tip for anyone working on that steering cylinder. Before removing the top cap, remove the Allen head plug in the middle of the cap. That relieves the suction on the underside and makes removal easier without the possibility of breaking off the edges of the cap.

The 1850 with the Perkins diesel had a lot of quirks like you are experiencing. Charge on McDuff, the enemy is time and money and you only win when you either are the richest man in the world or you are homeless and living on the streets. Today's job is replacing the gaskets on the exhaust headers on the ZTR. My hands are leaking red stuff in several places. I now understand why the old man in the shop was always bleeding. Old skin on the backs of hands that have been at war with time and tight places tends to spring a leak when in contact with even smooth surfaces.

You should change it like I do, the other day my muffler fell off the ZTR 🤣 I guess it’s time for some glass packs!

@@rosstheoliverman On the 85 Honda Big Red, I made a square tube exhaust pipe an put a 12 hp garden tractor muffler on the end. It has another plus and that is the back pressure keeps the engine from over revving. Worked great when the grandkids were young. A friend was crying about the cost of an exhaust system for his side by side. He saw the garden tractor muffler and went home an put one on his unit. $20 fix for a $400 replacement. I got the exhaust back on and tightened up. I always had trouble with those gaskets walking around when putting exhaust manifolds and etc. on things. Today I solved that problem. I super glued them into place and they never moved out of position while working things around. Then during a tune up I dropped a sparkplug (was reusing the ones in it as they were in great shape) and broke the porcelain. Going to be a 20 mile drive for 2 plugs. Got to get it going as the grass is way overgrown. Need to cultivate the garden because the rains we have gotten has sprouted grass in the rows. Sure wish I could have found a small amount of Treflan. It worked great in the gardens years ago.

Not hard to see why dealer mechanics have training sessions when new/upgraded models become part of their knowledge base. Sadly a goodly number of mechanics from this era of machinery have gone to the great beyond, leaving a void in dealing with remove/reinstall situations. Keep chuggin' Ross...you'll win the 1850 battle!!!

That fluid damper was over kill. I guess they thought that 6-354 bolted solid to the cast tub would be a problem. MF used that engine as a stressed frame member (heavier reinforced block) with no problems and no damper .With the way the front mount extended the overhang of the pully and dampner it caused a lot of crankshaft spline faliures with that wedge assembly. I had weak splines on mine on overhaul disguarded the damper and used loctite liquid metal. Ben over 1000 hrs no vibration no problems.

My oldest son looked into getting an Oliver tractor, I can't remember the model, but he didn't because of some advice from a person who works on them, telling him that it's hard to get parts. My White has that issue too, but I bought it back about 20 years ago when parts were still available. My youngest son and I have worked on my White's steering box a couple of times, so I can understand what you're saying about how the steering box is pinned. Good luck with the rest of the repair on the Oliver 1850. Have a nice day!

Ross I bought a tractor and the loader that use to be on it. They had.the loader oil supply coming from the remote hook ups to the loader spool valve. What a night mare!!! The manufacturer sells the fittings to plumb it into the tractor. I have the remotes open!!!

Watching you reminds me of all the fun I had when I switched from a narrow front to a wide front on my 1850, All the joys of figuring out what has to come apart to do this the easy way ! I ended up taking the crank dampener off and found out it has shims behind it so it went back together the same way. I did take the grill off to make this a lot easer to work on , Just dont forget to put a quad seal in or like me you get to do it all over again ! LOL We do it right cause we do it twice ! LOL Bandit

@@rosstheoliverman I tried to take that bolt and arm off that hold the steering box to the frame but it would not budge ! 50 plus years of rust holding it in place it wasnt going to mover so I went to plan B ! The narrow front had to come out and when you work by yourself well you just get the job done somehow and call it good. After taking the 9 bolts out of the balancer and taking it off the steering box came out easy. Why I forgot about the quad seal I'll never know but I did and got to take it all back apart to put it in. When your short the proper tools or equipment well you just get creative in how you do things and it can get a little sketchy but you make it work to get the job done. Thank God I have a skid steer to use cause it comes in mighty handy when working on a tractor by yourself ! LOL That about the 10th wide front I've changed on Oliver tractors but I will say an 1850 is a little different to do one, But pulling the grill and radiator off makes it a lot easer to do thats for sure. I think every 1850 I've seen has had the steel line fixed or replaced with a hose cause they all brake the fitting or line at the steering box. It never brakes the other side its always the right side at the box. I looked at the steel line and it had 2 other spots ware it was brazed from rubbing on the frame so with those plus the broken line at the fitting I put a hose on it and there is no good way to run one ether ! Bandit
