If you start with a chain that is half the width you need and double crochet on the back side of the chain, you don't need to sew anything. It creates a pouch that turns into a cat hat.

hi yes! I would recommend starting with a smaller base (maybe 8-10 double crochets) and doing everything else the same. You may end up doing fewer rows on increases as well. You can look up other patterns for the base of the hat! For the horns, you can just end it a few rows early :) i hope this helps!!

i’m confused because if row 3 is supposed to have 39 rows and then the next row is 2dc 2dc 1dc 1dc repeat that would create 58 stitches not 52?

No it does not count as your first double crochet! They are called turning chains, you do them because you need to be at the right height for your row of double crochets. If you were doing a row of single crochets you’d only need to chain 1. But your chains do not count as your stitches. 🫶🏻
