It was my first season owning a Mac 26m. The marina docks are full of spiders and they find their way inside the boat and some of them were huge. For next season when I put the boat in the water I will make sure I seal the companionway hatch so they can't get in. The factory setup for the hatch has a lot of gaps. They can also get in where the steering and motor cables go into the hull at the stern. I will be closing that up as well. Small old mud wasps nests were also found inside the boat when I first bought it from the previous owner. A lot of Macs have a poor seal in the from hatch as well, usually from age which makes the seal shrink lengthwise. Solution to that is glue in a new one. Also when you pull the boat out... it looked like you only had the winch hooked up to the front bow eye... you should also have a chain hooked to the bow at the same point , and one line from the anchor cleat to the trailer ladder...but tied loosely. Some boat owners also like to have a winching strap to hold the bow down during transport from the bow eye to the trailer frame. I see you have a winch strap at the stern which is great.
@Sylvia_Mac2 ай бұрын
Luckily most of the spiders where only on the outside! Yeah, when we transport it long distances she gets a chain on the bow and strapped down across the back. We only have to go about half a mile from the launch to where we keep her so we didn't go through fastening her down very well.

Great videos. That heavy chop is not unusual on the Chesapeake if winds are out of the south (or north). Avoid going directly into the swells if possible--keep them at an angle of 30 degrees or so off the bow, will make for a smoother ride. And most sailboats SAIL much better in rougher seas than they motor, give it a try when you have built up more confidence in your abilities.
@Sylvia_Mac3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips! We definitely notice it's smoother with the sails up but for this trip we had very low confidence, it's getting better!

What's the headroom like in a MacGregor 26m? Can you guys stand up in it or do you have to crouch?
@Sylvia_Mac5 ай бұрын
If you're 5'10 or shorter you can stand comfortably. Even if you're 6' the companionway sliding hatch gives enough headroom while closed under that part of the boat. Towards the head, vbirth and the rear birth you're hunched over or crawling lol.

I am on season 7 of my Mac 26m and it’s so fun to watch new sailers learn how I did. One tip that may or may not help-When I had difficulty raising the main it was almost always because I had the boom vang and/or main sheet engaged. Those must be free or at least let out so they do not pull the leech (back edge) of the sail so tight that the luff (front edge) can’t pull tight. I looked like that was happening in this video but I could be wrong. I actually ripped a Spinlock PXR cam cleat out of the deck cranking with the winch trying to force up the sail with the main sheet too tight. I also stopped using the topping lift which was a mistake because that made dropping the sail difficult for a similar reason. Another way to make things easier is to clean the sail track and sail slugs and spray the track with any good dry lube. WD-40 makes one that is decent. Keep at it and have fun!
@Sylvia_Mac4 ай бұрын
@@edp5499 Thank you so much for this insight. I think both recommendations are really good ones. I don't think the track has been cleaned in years! Next time we bring the mast down it's one of our top chores to complete.

i have been sailing for decades on my yacht and sail jams are a regular accurance.I usually throw the anchor if i am by myself of use my auto helm. There will all ways be things breaking /jamming and corroding, just part and parcel of boating. Stick with it,as with time it gets easier!For instance just last week my solar panel went faulty and so did the stereo!, also found my propellor too be loose and my sthrough hull paddle speed wheel stopped working! I just have a list of things to fix and maintain constantly, but thats fine by me.

I have a Sailfish 25 drop keel built in 1980, I think the macgregor is a great choice for novice sailors, as you have the speed to bail on a passage and get too harbour quick, or if you have engine failure, you have the sails, to sail to shore. My sister had one of these yachts recently for a few years.
@Sylvia_Mac6 ай бұрын
Oh yeah Sailfish are nice boats. It's working out well for us so far. We had an issue with the motor and knowing we could still get somewhere definitely made us feel better.

Congratulations on the boat. It looks really good. And, the real reason I am commenting, is to say congratulations on the video. It has a really nice," come along and share our day with us" feel. I've got an older Mac, and because I am so geographically far away from it almost all the time, I have not gotten to the point that you have, to put it on a mooring ball. So I am more than a little jealous. But, your video actually gives me a little inspiration for the future. You should all count yourselves lucky to be part of such a nice, tight family. As I said, good job on the video. It was nice to see something without any of the all too common vulgarity and profanity of so many other shares. Something I would not hesitate to share with anyone. And, one of my pet peeves is people putting a hard rock or heavy metal music background on their videos. So, I really appreciated your music background. Good job. Have a good day, and hopefully sunny skies and fair winds soon for you.
