The first three and a half minutes (presumably the "Prologue" music, as distinct from the more standard medley overture that follows) strongly foreshadow Sondheim's music for the main theme from the film Stavisky, which followed three years later. Not exactly the same, of course, but very much in the same vein.

A lot of Stavitsky songs are cut songs from follies. The vocal score for follies has them in the back, or on KZbin search Sondheim Follies Demos and listen to his demos of early follies songs, then relisten to stavitsky. He even uses an earlier version of beautiful girls in the soundtrack.

I saw LA CAGE w/its original cast, on B'way, in April 1984. I was 13 at the time, and I was enthralled w/theater. I remember during the Overture, the curtain rose, the audience was taken inside the club and then out walked Georges (Gene Barry) welcoming us and offering us champagne "from now until the finale."

Sondheim is an immensely talented composer; Without even seeing the play, this evokes that memory long forgotten but never was.

This is absolutely fantastic. Previously only knew "Lovely" -- now I know how great a tune "Love, I Hear" is. // It was Stephen Sondheim's first Broadway musical in which he wrote both music and lyrics. The musical won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (David Burns), Best Book, and Best Director.

@@MrAkardashian mmm it's vocally beautiful, but nope, no soul. I don't think it's because she's not a soulful singer, but because when recording soundtracks, the songs are still too fresh to have matured in her heart. I am hella sure that if she would have recorded this a year later the result would be astounding, as she has an incredible voice. XOXO
