Lovely performance until the last chorus seemed rushed to me. A lot of beautiful harmonies in that fugue that are hard to sift through when played at that speed. Even so, I love this piece. I first listened to it in college in 1985.

C.P.E.'s music is a string of tired clichés, competently woven together. A well-trained musician but absolutely lacking in inspiration and genius. What a contrast with the bold, shocking, scintillating imagination of his father! And oh! all the bullshit comments below which seem to be generated by KZbin bots.

@@alindmay Good point, but CPE’s music is categorically *not* Viennese (mainly) sturm und drang, but his own very personal take on North German empfindsamer Stil.
@elaineblackhurst1509

NisanyanS Music is sometimes like listening to someone speaking a foreign language one does not understand; you may appreciate the sound as in the case of Italian for example which is naturally very beautiful, but may not understand a word of the message. I would suggest that if CPE is a foreign language to you, the lack of understanding might just be your problem not that of CPE; I have a similar issue with the music of Debussy who I might well describe in the words you have used above, I would not however, because I understand the problem is entirely mine. Your analysis of CPE is mistaken, but to use another metaphor, music is like food - some you like and some you don’t and it’s a personal thing with no right or wrong answer. CPE is actually one of the few composers to put his own musical aesthetics into words, if you are interested in challenging your own problem with CPE, get a copy of his Versuch and read the relevant sections; if not, just think of CPE as I do Debussy, but be wary of making bold statements that are in fact as inaccurate as to fact as they are unrepresentative in judgement.

CPE Bach is a fascinating North German empfindsamer Stil relatively unknown area of the predominantly Viennese Classical period so dominated by the very different sounds of Mozart and Haydn, to the exclusion of almost all else. CPE was the only composer Haydn ever acknowledged as a mentor and the respect was mutual; apart from one alleged quote, there is almost nothing of CPE in Mozart, apart from CPE’s Versuch (Manual on keyboard playing) which was known to all composers as it outlines in some detail what was to become modern keyboard technique (Beethoven was still using it into the 19th century).

@@111wolfgang The borrowings are actually very few, but there is no doubt that Mozart rated JC Bach very highly and remembered those days in London 1764/65 with affection and gratitude for the rest of his life. In the context of this discussion, JC Bach is to Mozart as CPE Bach is to Haydn

Magnificent rendition! This is the best C.P.E. Bach Magnificat I ever heard so far. Both of Philipp Emanuel's inner personae; Sanguineus and Melancholicus have ample opportunity to express themselves in this masterpiece. His penchant for constant and sometimes reckless experimentation makes CPE a composer that might offer inspiration and artistic guidance for our troubled and confused present historical moment. The grösse Fuge "Sicut erat in principio" never sounded so coherent and unified as here, in my humble opinion. This Fuge is a spiritual bridge between J.S. Bach and the polyphony of Haydn/Mozart/Beethoven.
