Hi I’m a 15 year old kid from England. I would like to work in film/tv/advert creation when I’m older, as director or videographer most likely as i do enjoy making films however I haven’t made many. I entered a kids film contest in the summer and came runner up, got it screened and got interviewed too. I would say I’m pretty good for my age. However my mum said i don’t watch or like films very much which is true, I don’t watch many and she says I ought to rethink my career choice. I suppose I could do with some watching more films and more drive but I’m concerned if I don’t start focusing on a certain career now, I’ll struggle to meet future goals of living comfortably as getting a solid income means a lot to me. However at school, I’d say Im fairly above average but not outstanding in all subjects, kind of a 6/7 student, maybe pushing towards an 8 in one or two subjects so far but I do get a lot of praise for being very respectful and nice, very hard working and purposeful which I am. So yeah I’m not sure if I should work towards filmmaking. Any advice?

Hey man. What I would tell you is to take some pressure off yourself, you don't need to make these decisions right now. If you want to go into filmmaking then do it, and if you find out that it's not for you then you can just change paths. You have your whole life to go for anything you want and figure it all out. You don't need to have watched a million films to understand filmmaking, you just need to be creative and enjoy making films. There's plenty of great work in the film industry and it's growing all the time. It sounds like you're on the right track already, keep making films and going to film festivals, get your name out there and get as much experience as you can. Good luck
