About twenty years ago I was sitting in a lecture you gave at the Violin Society of America. You were complaining that no violin makers make five string violins. I am sitting there thinking that I had made a dozen five string violins by that time, many to good, professional folk musicians. Now,here you are reviewing a carbon fiber violin. I’m 77 and still make great acoustic, wooden, traditional violins that sound like violins, and happy I do. Someday contact me for a real violin

Thinking of starting cello, been playing electric bass for years. If I get a carbon cello with whitner pegs I won't have to put up with that luthier BS 😅

It has a good sound but there is a lot of buzz coming from the amp. It seems like the sheilding in the electrics is not very effective. That would definitely put me off.

I've had Knilling and Whitner. The Killing slipped in the middle of a concert. The Whitner are easier and more sensitive to tune. The Whitner don't require pushing in to lock in the tone. I love the mechinal pegs, just won't use the Knilling again.

I'm so nervous to put these on my multi generation fiddles, but I know it will increase their life. Plus I've already broken my heart destroying an E peg.. if my A on my viola goes it will make me cry.

I don't think you need to grasp the pegbox while turning the pegs. It takes a while before the inner part becomes slack (then you just need to push the peg in).

Hi Darol, I literally cannot curve my thumb the right way, I have extremely crazy long spagethetti hands. my thumb feels more flexible bent the opposite way, it locks if I bend it the way other people do. Will I ever be able to be good based on this, I wasn't finding it a problem until I learnt it was 'wrong'.

Hello thanks for your videos! I play guitar and have been taking Bryan Sutton’s lessons for a while but would like to take up fiddle as well. If I take your artist works course using a 5 string fiddle instead of a four, would that make things unnecessarily difficult for me?

I always wondered if they change the value of the instrument. According to Darol, unless you have a Strad or other super collectable instrument, probably not. After all I guess, they are meant to be played.
@davew7948
@davew7948 Жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Pitcairn has a Strad and geared pegs. I doubt they make any difference to the financial value of an instrument, but they increase its musical value because it is easier to pick up and play.

Just came from a pretty fancy gig my daughter was playing in Beverly Hills and at the end of the first set, she came running over to me frantic that her her mechanical E string peg was stripped ! As a cellist, I always used regular pegs on my instruments and for the Gaspari pegs there were screws that you could use a screw driver on to tighten them if need be. But the ones now, have nothing and if they fail, you are out of luck. So, I ran to the car and found a pair of pliers and was able to tune her E string by turning the shaft. I'm waiting to here if she made it thru the gig okay. I told her to just use the fine turner and don't bump it !

I tried out a Glasser, a Realist and a London AES 5 string, and ended up buying the London AES. All three were nice, but the London was superior for me. Of course, it cost significantly more than the Glasser and the Realist but is totally worth it IMO. The acoustic capabilities of the Realist and the London were significantly better than the Glasser, which is part of what sold me on it.

Hey, I am just thinking about either AES London or Golden Tasman. What´s the style of music you play and do you also use pedals? I think London is passive, right? Thanks a Lot for your answer.

Now we have string winders designed for them, which means you can litterally crank the pegs when restringing the instrument, just like a Guitar. Friction Pegs & Fine tuners are way too outta date nowadays, all Stringed instruments should use just Geared Tuners & also String Winders cause it's way more updated.

I'm afraid they'll have to phase out all the friction pegs & fine tuners from the Violin/Viola/Cello (and other instruments such as Viola da Gamba, and even so Lute), & just stick to geared tuners cause they turn more smoothly, plus you can use a string winder to speed up the string change.
