I don't really disagree with you but same could be said about the recording side, so I am not sure that's the crux of the issue

If everyone could perform a heart transplant, the surgeon wouldn't earn $200 an hour for doing it. Taking this a step further, the people supporting the surgeon make a lot less than that. But the cardio nurse who the doctor picks for his team every time he does a surgery makes the most. If you want to make the money, be the nurse they pick. If you want to make change, get all the nurses to refuse work. If you want to reform the industry, get the doctors to join them. That isn't going to happen, though, because there are too many people who lack the ethics to join you. By the way, I don't know who any of you are. I'm not an industry fanatic, I just like good music. As a casual fan, I probably couldn't name one producer. Is Dr. Dre a producer? My point is, outside of the people who buy front row at the concert and cry when they see Tee-Sweezy, the casual fans probably don't know you, and the labels know that. Maybe there's something in there you can use.

Interesting, would you have a reference to share?

I’m a concert lighting designer. Years ago we’d get a design fee and a cut of ticket sales. Now we get asked why we’re charging a design fee when we already did a design as part of the pitch to get the job. Management also expect full visualisations of an almost complete design as part of the pitch. I’ve worked for artists that lost money on every tour until they got to headlining arenas, and that was before 360 deals and the label taking a cut of live and merch revenue. There’s only so much pie to go around and the artist needs some too.

Check letters of note and search for nirvana. Or just google Steve Albani Nirvana. There’s a photo of the original letter and interviews with him.
