Hi Mike, I have a leaking pool and will be replacing all of the underground pipework with new. I'll also be replacing the skimmers so was impressed with what you explained, although my inground is in France so slightly different to your arragement. Regarding connecting the underground pipes to the skimmer before concreting-in, I see that you're creating a 'trap' arrangement by bringing the pipe up from the bottom of the skimmer, presumably to achieve a shallower trench depth for the main drainage lines? My trench will be about 2 ft in depth so like yours, slightly higher than the bottom of the skimmer. Is forming a trap arrangement correct and a final question, do the return drainage line have to be level - clearly the bottom drain is a return line and is much lower than the trench lines. Thanks a lot and hopefully you can explain? Gary

When you're doing maintenance on your filter Just keep the plumbing simple run it straight from the skimmer So you can get it straight shot of water before and after Once your service is complete you can start turning your solar panels back on and stuff like that For example if you leave the valve and open for your solar panels you could end up with some clean or dirty DE circulating through that plumbing that may or may not be undesirable Just run it straight from the skimmer bust your filter do your service put it all back together and then do whatever you want after that Hope this helps

Variable speed pumps are generally more energy-efficient than single-speed pumps, and they can save money over time despite the initial higher cost. Here’s why: 1. Energy Efficiency: Variable speed pumps allow you to run the pump at lower speeds for longer periods. Running at lower speeds significantly reduces energy consumption. The power consumption of a pump is proportional to the cube of the speed, so running at half speed can use only about one-eighth of the power compared to full speed. 2. Customizable Settings: You can tailor the pump schedule to your specific pool needs, optimizing filtration and circulation while minimizing energy use. For example, you can run the pump at higher speeds only when necessary (e.g., during pool usage or cleaning cycles) and at lower speeds for regular circulation. 3. Extended Lifespan: Running the pump at lower speeds reduces wear and tear, potentially extending the lifespan of the pump and reducing maintenance costs. 4. Rebates and Incentives: Many utility companies offer rebates and incentives for installing variable speed pumps due to their energy-saving benefits. While running a single-speed pump at full speed for six to eight hours might seem simpler, it often results in higher energy costs. Variable speed pumps provide more control and efficiency, leading to significant cost savings over time. To maximize savings and efficiency with a variable speed pump, it’s essential to optimize the schedule and speeds according to your pool’s specific needs.

@@UltimatePoolGuy You're very welcome I found this thread to be extremely interesting. I am basically pretty scientific and while many of the arguments posted here are interesting I still just find it difficult to believe that when the pump reports using less wattage that that in fact doesn't translate into cost savings. It just seems so obvious that if the pump is reporting it's wattage usage at a much lower rate it has to be less expensive. Great channel and thanks for raising the subject it was very intriguing and interesting to read other people's positions regarding these pumps.

If running a single speed pump for 6-8 hours a day cost more to operate than a variable speed pump, the single speed pump is larger than needed. Everybody pops off with that "power consumption is proportional to the cube of the speed" thing. But the real problem is the "head drops off by the square of the speed". So, running at half speed causes a 75% drop in the pressure, and the pump is no longer able to do the job required. Extended life span is also not true. The old dumb pumps with no computerized electronics will last longer, as there is not computerized electronics to fail. Rebates and Incentives are just as smart a government idea as having an open border. They want you to think they are helping, when they are really stabbing you in the back at the same time. Rebates and incentives are the only way variable speed pumps are viable, just like wind generators. Anything the government is incentivizing is more than likely a bad thing.

@@dab7963 There is a reason Watts show up on the screen but not the pressure. If you are scientific enough you should be able to understand the basic Brake Horsepower equation. [BHP] = {[Q] * [TDH] * [S.G.]} / {3960 * [Eff] TDH is a very important part that variable speed pump salespeople try to gloss over because so much is lost with a reduction in speed.

I understand a three phase motor is more efficient than a single phase motor. But varying the speed makes a three phase motor less efficient. If you set it up to run 24/7 a VS pump can save a lot more energy than a single speed pump. But you cannot save any more energy than by turning the pump off when the job is done. I also understand there is much less pressure needed for a pool pump than well pumps. But you still need some pressure to make pool equipment work properly, and when you reduce the speed you loose the pressure needed to do any work.

I have watched this long and confusing video before. But I watched the entire thing again. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not see a pressure gauge or ever hear pressure or head required mentioned? This is just another typical BS video designed to confuse you with a bunch of worthless numbers, trying to make you think a Variable Speed Pump is worth all the extra expense and problems that go with. It never compares apples to apples. Since the Affinity Law says pressure increases by the square of the speed, the difference in head produced at 3450 RPM compared to only 3000 RPM would be tremendous. If the head from 3450 RPM is not needed, then this video is comparing a grossly oversized full speed pump with a VS pump, which is usually the case when they can show any savings for varying the speed. If the VS pump can achieve enough head or pressure to make the filter and skimmers work running at 3000 RPM, it is never used as any larger than a 1HP pump. If at 1HP load the VS pump draws 1520 watts, a single speed 1HP pump would only draw 1440 watts, as it has no computerized controller and is not drawing an extra 5% the way a VS pump does. Then if 3 hours at full speed is all that is needed to filter the pool properly, turning off the pump for the other 21 hours a day saves 5,640 watts a day, or $1, 848.00 in 84 months over the VS pump. If a lower flow rate is needed for the salt system, a smaller full speed pump will again save energy over a VS pump. If the VS pump uses 3300 watts in 6 hours of use, a properly sized full speed pump will only use 3135 watts. Again, the full speed pump will use 5% less energy than the VS pump, saving another 165 watts a day. A third and even smaller full speed pump would save another 5% over the 2100 watts per day the VS pump uses at this low speed. However, at this speed it is doing absolutely nothing in terms of filtering, or any work needed for the pool. A full 2100 watts can be saved every day by just turning the pump off for the 15 hours it is doing nothing anyway. So, having a third pump this small would be useless and not needed. A pump running at full speed is always more efficient than when the speed is reduced. Reducing a pump’s speed not only makes it less efficient but requires a VFD controller which uses extra energy on top of what the pump is using. I can show a few hundred watts savings for using a properly sized full speed pump compared to the VS pump. But there are very little savings to be made as pumps cannot be made more efficient than they already are. Pumps are made to be most efficient at full speed, and there is no way around that short of changing the laws of physics. I will say this one more time. A VS pump may be more convenient than having a two pump system, but it is not more efficient. Three phase motors are more efficient than single phase. Permanent magnets and high efficiency motors also help but varying the pump speed actually causes more energy use, not less. A motor cannot use less energy than when it is turned off. If it is spinning so slow it is not doing any work anyway, it just needs to be turned off. Oh BTW, A VS pump controller can still use energy even when the pump is not running.

People fall for all these ridiculous marketing schemes like "90% energy savings", "less stress on the pump, motor, filter, etc.", and are made to feel guilty if they don't believe them. "Mandated variable speed pool pumps" in California, means politicians are getting kick backs and we the people are getting screwed. I guess I could say I have a system that saves 100% energy. When not using any water, my system will turn the pump off, which is saving 100% more energy than any variable speed pump running at any speed and using any amount of energy. You should do a show on confirmation bias. People believe marketing gimmicks to be factual research and fall for this stuff. Once they have made up their mind and purchased a variable speed pump they can get very angry when you try to explain variable speed pumps do not save any energy. Keep up the good work my friend. But watch your back. There are a lot of people (companies) who don't want the facts about VFD's to be published. People have ended up missing or worse for far fewer facts than you are posting. 🙂

Chemical engineer here. I have some disagreements. You are right in that installing a vfd with a bigger pump doesn’t make a ton of sense. Benefit of a vfd is that you can reduce the number of gal recirculated throughout the day. I want one on my pool because I believe I don’t need to run full speed all day long. I want to run 6-8hr full speed and min speed test of the day to keep the pump primed. Well pump example is much different in that it has a minimum head requirement. Pool pumps won’t need as much head at lower flows through the filters, piping, etc. thanks for the video.
@UltimatePoolGuy3 ай бұрын

@cyclestopvalves83803 ай бұрын
A pool pump doesn't loose prime when it is turned off. If that is the only reason to have a variable speed pool pump you are wasting 16 hours worth of electricity, no matter how much or how little energy the pump is using at reduced speed. There is no difference between a well pump and a pool pump, they both use centrifugal impellers. The pool pump is just designed to produce less head than a deep well pump, but it still has to produce a certain amount of head all the same. The real argument is, when using a VFD to reduce the flow and head of a pump, any centrifugal pump, would a much smaller and properly sized full speed pump, (designed for the lower head and flow requirement) use less energy than the variable speed pump? The answer is yes. Pumps are designed to be the most efficient at rated speed. Anytime you reduce the RPM from rated speed, the pump/motor is losing efficiency. I have said many times, a variable speed pump is great if you just want to be able to turn the flow up and down as you please. But I have a big problem with them being sold as an energy saving device when they actually increase the energy use to pump the water and use energy like any computer, on top of what the pump is using.
