I used to raise steers in Minnesota until the late 90s. My calves would usually come from Montana and we raised all kinds of breeds with the exception of Holsteins. We had some Salers in the herd for a few years and while they were good cattle and yielded very well at the packing plant, they were a lot of trouble. Very high strung and skittish. Sometimes when I'd walk up to the feed room the steers that were up by the fence would just bolt down to the other end of the yard. Another cattleman near me had the same problem with them. I told my buyer that I didn't want them anymore and he said other cattlemen were complaining about them as well. He said one farmer had one as a 4H calf for his son and couldn't even get him broke. Perhaps some of their behavior was a result of the high energy rations we fed them but we didn't have problems like that with other cattle. Other than that wild one every grower occasionally gets.
