I was 16 when this movie came out and my BF had just left for Army boot camp. After that, he was stationed in another city, then country. The long distance destroyed the relationship. I never understood why the female characters in this movie would voluntarily put themselves in this position. Naval aviators are gone for 18 months on an aircraft carrier. I lived in VA Beach near NAS Norfolk. Worked with Navy wives at my job. Their husband’s were always gone. They handled everything with the house and kids. One girl’s husband was a Navy seal. He was never around. One girl’s husband flew his P-3 plane into the side of a mountain. Another’s husband was on a submarine. Those guys don’t ever tell ya shit. My husband was Navy reserves (intelligence officer) and they wanted to call him to active duty. (Not wartime) I said no. I was not going to lose my husband to the sea for nearly two years. This movie is a sweet romance/dreams come true. But in reality, that life sucks. When the husband of my neighbor across the street left on deployment, she moved her BF in. These marriages don’t last. God bless the men and women in uniform. Just don’t marry them.

I wonder if people or most especially women today, think the concept of the "Puget Deb" which is the woman who seeks in some way, to get a male aviator to marry her, because he is "the answer to her dreams" is offensive and breathtakingly outdated.

This movie has some very important and quite unexpected lessons, that illuminate some illogical things that take place in employment. For that reason, this movie should be required viewing for all college and high school students. This movie demonstrates the concept that: when an employer wants to get rid of an unwanted employee, they do not terminate them. Rather, they get that unwanted employee to quit. Additionally, this situation may turn into a battle of wits and wills. as clearly shown in this movie. I know this from many experiences. In fact, I am considering writing a book on this subject.
