Excellent video about an excellent distro. Subscribed. I really hope that Mint cuts out the middle man that is Ubuntu, and switches to just the Debian edition.

My first desktop environment, then I tried KDE and I liked it, but I don't know why I ended up using XFCE again in all of my distros. I can't get rid of it, I don't want to neither. It just a weird feeling.

You had trouble telling which workspace you were in. Each workspace can have a different wallpaper. I wrote a Bash program which uses Image Magick to make 4 soft patterns of the type called "plasma" with a bias for 4 colors. So I have a blue, green, yellow and red to divide up my work.

Is there a way how to tweak XFCE to utilize as much 16:9 laptop screen as possible for creative work? I mean: 16:9 screen is good for watching movies/playing games but nothing else - vertical dimension is too short for good text analysis, fast orientation in long text etc. I would like to have XFCE where everything would be side-shifted: I can have deskbar instead of horizontal bar, but what about window decorations, is it possible to shift them to the side? Thanks.

Your XFCE looks great, would you mind sharing how you made it look like this ? (top bar, icons, color theme, etc.?) Many thanks for the great video ! Made me want to give it a try and subscribed to your channel.

One problem I had while trying Debian was that I'd install a web browser--from the package manager or by using the terminal--but was unable to run it.

XFCE with Qogir is a great combination. Especially with "kora" icons. I can imagine myself using this for the rest of my life. It's so fast and responsive. It never crashes. XFCE is a rare example of a design that has achieved near peak greatness and the developers have the sense to not mess it up with change for the sake of change.

I started with a netbook that had it's own Linux distro forked from an old Fedora distro I switched to Ubuntu Ubuntu was terribly buggy, which gave me a lot of experience fixing things to get them to work I eventually switched to a distro called Crunchbang, a minimalist Debian distro When the guy who developed it quit for other things, I found that my needs were better met by Debian itself I've been using Debian ever since I value Debian's stability and that it just works, no messing about trying to reconfigure things, no need to hack things into it to get stuff working And so very customisable And every non-techie friend I've introduced to Debian has been very happy with it too Easy to use for the greenest noob

When you want your mask/mod (ctrl,shift,win/super,alt) keys to trigger something, you can use the keys directly. You can see them when you run xmodmap. shift for example uses Shift_L or Shift_R . So you could use "Control Shift_L" to trigger you keymap. But the direct use of mods as keys can be tricky. I wanted to open the menu with the win/super key. But than it opens on every combo containing this key. Best you just try if it fits your case.

I use to use fluxbox like 15 years ago. I can't believe it's still alive. I liked to use it because of the simplicty, the tabs and the fact it barely required any resourced to run on my cheap computers back in the day. These days I don't see a need for it anymore but it's nice to see it's still being used.

I'm using Debian since Woody, xfce4-panel and Fluxbox, and what I want in newer software I get as flatpak. I play games on it with Lutris and Steam, and everything runs well. I look sometimes at other distros in a virtualbox, but nothing so far convinced me to change. I like it that I only have to sweat through a major system update around every two years, an these have been mostly uneventful.

I've been trying Debian 12 for a month and it works. It;s not my favorite but my favorite, Linux Mint, derives from it. I have used one Debian based OS or another for 30+ years and like apt. Some of my favorite software is not in the repo so I had to jump thru hoops to get them installed, like mysql-server which is critical for my home lab. I was surprised that many of my apps just work. Debian WORKS what more can I say. I'm not deleting my Mint 22 install.

I've been using linux for about a year now and i've tried some envo's but XFCE has been my most fav I think becuase it's the most similar to windows even some keybinds are similer or you can change it to be like windows.
@akra93044 ай бұрын
you can change all of the keybinds on keyboard settings + window manager settings, this is linux we are talking about! you can customize everything!

Funnily enough, the public opinion of what "just werks" is the opposite for me. Ubuntu, Debian and Mint break easily and quickly for me but I can abuse an Arch, Void or Gentoo install and it'll be as stable as people tell me Debian is and I don't need to do extensive set up or troubleshooting at all.

I hate Debian. I couldn’t actually stick with Linux when I was using Debian based distros. Ever since I started using Arch, I finally got rid of windows entirely. I don’t understand why people think nuking your entire install just to update it to the latest software somehow makes a system more stable.
@ENNEN4204 ай бұрын
My favorite part about that is that the software I use isn't in the next version's repository for a LONG time for "muh stability" so my options are either compiling from source on a 12 year old laptop or making an unstable frankendebian that'll break either the next day or next month. I used Debian for a few weeks and had trouble with it so I went to Arch and had problems, but it made me learn the basics and when it was fixed the issues never came back. Tbh I'd never be looking at net admin certs if Debian hadn't disappointed me. It's usable unlike Ubuntu at least...

@@ENNEN420 oh and I know all about using 12 year old laptops! Thinkpad T430 and a MacBook 2012. The MacBook runs Manjaro and the thinkpad dual boots Manjaro and Arch; I have an 8 year old Chromebook that runs Manjaro too and my desktop is a X99 with an old 14 core Xeon. 😂 Linux runs excellent on old hardware. The stuff I’ve brought back from the dead with it is insane.

From 2006 I fiddled with Linux, started with Mandriva and Fedora!First install of Mandriva I lost my data, didn't knew about backups then!From 2017 untill now I used Tumbleweed, but now I moved to Debian stable because software age isn't a problem anymore, we have flatpaks!So a stable base with the latest and greatest is the best balance I find!Of course if the hardware is new I would recommend Tumbleweed!
@personanongratis5 ай бұрын
Debian is the best, but you have to work for it and work hard!With backports and flatpaks old software isn't a problem anymore!I manged to make VMware workstation and Da Vinci Resolve to work, software where you have to fiddle with kernel modules or opencl stuff,but because of the stable kernel 6.5 everything works!

There’s one BIG reason to stay on windows that you missed. I recently tried to switch to Linux, I tried many distros and I liked many. However, this one thing made give up. And that is TROUBLESHOOTING. Whatever happens on windows there’s some kind of gui to lead you through fixing process. Lots of problems get fixed automatically. Windows is just plug and play. You just start using it. I don’t wanna learn sudo shit and other commands. On every distro something wasn’t working and after days of fixing I just gave up.

I’ve been using Linux as a testing Os for about 10 months now. The last 2 months have been as a main daily driver on a small thinkstation. I’m looking to migrate my Dell Precision workstation from 2018 because windows 10 is end of life and windows 11 will not run on it. I’ve been using Rocky as my main driver and I really like it. When the time comes I’ll either lean towards Rocky or Ubuntu but Rocky has been better suited for my needs.

So, I love linux, and I use it exclusively in my home, but you are overselling its benefits. By all means everyone should use it, and have control of THIER computer, but it isn't magic. A modern distro won't run well on 30 year old hardware, or 20 year old hardware frankly and assertions otherwise will just burn people with disappointment.
@linuxlodge6 ай бұрын
It depends what your goals are. 20-year old computer and internet surfing? If the computer was high-end at its time, slam openbox, bspwm or dwm on it and it will most likely be perfect for casual surfing and emails. Are you going to edit videos and play Alien Isolation? Of course not. You're right, 30-year old computers would be usable on Shell only, barely, but a 25-year old computer might do if all you need to do is to run to-do lists with taskwarrior, write prose with vim, or just to play around and see your power-hungry dinosaur computer revived for better or worse.
