Great to see the speed potential. How about the light wind performance?
@Yorky19564 күн бұрын
There a many factors which contribute to a boats performance. I designed the REO 8.5 to have great performance in good breeze with a crew of four. The hull shape, weight and size of rig are the major factors. She performs well in 8 knots and extremely well above 12 knots. A larger rig would improve the performance in the lower wind range but would detract from the performance in the upper range.

I like the concept of the boat. I sailed various skiffs and sport boats. But on our lake we have many times 5kn and less. Would it help to add a top head sail, like a code 0?

I have a VX One. This looks like a big VX One. One thing I would think about, cut the clew of the spin higher. Better visibility. Brain Bennet designed the Viper 6.40. Then years later designed the VX One and fixed all the problems with the first boat.
@rockie0712 ай бұрын
Seems silly, and totally unfair to stick your boat in with heavy displacement boats. I mean, you'd have to take a deep look in the mirror if you couldn't beat them in anything over about 8 knots of breeze. Cool boat though. Looks fun.

@fargarden2 ай бұрын
Great sailing but I'm not sure the comparison is valid - you can't really compare a planing boat to a displacement yacht (despite IRC attempting to do just that). I think in any kind of swell you'd see a different outcome
@Yorky19562 ай бұрын
A big chop will make more difference than a big swell, but with either you usually have more breeze and this will help the REO 8.5 as we will plane even faster. I have not seen anyone take anything away from the performance of the Cape 31s and they are a planing boat sprouting how good they are that they beat other boats on IRC. There is no rating rule that can equitably rate boats with totally different performance curves across a range of conditions. Our Achilles heel is light air. We do not get much light air sailing in summer in Australia and I do not care about going fast in light air. I want to have fun and go fast in decent and strong breezes and I have a boat that does that. It is also fun beating boats about 20 feet longer!

Good question. I think it just feels comfortable as i am not holding onto a line with my right hand. I am a fair way back and the tiller extension is coming towards the centre of my body so it keeps my body centred for balance.

I've never been aboard any "go-fast" sailboat. But if there's just 2 sailboats out on a body of water, at some point they will have a go at it. It's just plain fun! I started with an old leaking Sunfish. I would have to tip it on it's side to drain the accumulated water to make it a little faster. My last boat was a Lancer 25 with a shoal draft keel and worn out sails. I came in 2nd once in a race and likely because the fastest boat didn't realize where the first mark was... he should have known it would be straight upwind and not stayed on the same tack.
