Back in the 80s when I was living and backpacking around Europe, the mentality was to have the biggest backpack you can carry. At that time I was carrying a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, multiple pairs of jeans, a heavy jacket, camera equipment was bulky. I saw others with tents and boots, stuff minimalists so longer carry. Lugging around a huge backpack at that time was a badge of honor. It's a different mentality now a days, gear is lighter, faster drying, cheap flights that rewards minimalist traveling.
@highonmike
@highonmike Ай бұрын
I can kinda understand what you’re saying.. that it was honorable to carry around a heavy load because it showed your dedication to traveling.. something like that? For me that’s just not the case. I carried around a decently heavy backpack on my first backpacking trip in Southeast Asia, and at a certain point it definitely made my experience worse than it could have been if i had a lighter load. My bag was filled with extra clothes and other things that i just wasn’t using.. and so I vowed that on my next journey i would force myself to carry less stuff, and thats why I got a smaller backpack - to force me to carry less stuff. I don’t need a lot of material possessions to travel around. More stuff = more burden. Less = more freedom. I value interactions, conversations, new experiences, time in the forest, beach, jungle, making art, playing sports, etc.. I can live out of a 25L backpack indefinitely. Thanks for sharing your story :)

Isn’t it better for the environment to keep the clothes you ready have rather than replacing them?. Also isn’t it better for the environment to not buy camera gear, phones, tablets, to not travel and use fuel, to not promote the tourism culture which displaces native people, to not make content and promote capitalism, etc? I have always found it hypocritical for people to pick and choose how they are “saving the world”.

Would love the comparison. I got the Earth Runners primal (thinnest ones) which feel robust and thick enough to hike over any sharp rugged terrain (like thin boots if you're used to being barefoot or having even thinner shoes like 4mm) but not too thick where it's unnecessary protection that takes away from ground feel and flexibility. They have the performance laces that they say are more durable but less soft and comfortable. And then the lifestyle laces (which I got) which are softer and they seem plenty durable enough to handle anything
@highonmike
@highonmike Ай бұрын
Nice ! I actually just ordered the earthrunners primal and the circadian (next sole size up bc they have the canvas footbed) and im going to try both and see which one feels better on my feet. Softer laces sounded nicer 😅 but i ended up getting performance laces because i kept getting recommendations that they would last longer if i hike a lot
@asdf1234_.
@asdf1234_. Ай бұрын
@@highonmike I was unsure too. I figured if I get the lifestyle laces I would be able to prove to myself if they are durable and reliable enough or not. They seem fine to me for hiking. If you break in the performance laces good they should still be comfortable I'd imagine
@asdf1234_.
@asdf1234_. Ай бұрын
I like when my clothes don't have a sporty look to them (more of a versatile minimalist look for any fashion situation) BUT they still have the performance and comfort to do anything sporty/athletic. So I just pulled the trigger on the lifestyle laces (where I can get a monochrome black and more guaranteed comfort) rather than the performance laces with more contrast stitching (more sporty look). And they seem durable and sporty for any of my needs with a more clean minimalist aesthetic
@highonmike
@highonmike Ай бұрын
@@asdf1234_. well i wish that your lifestyle laces last a long long time 🙏🏽 I respect the all-black minimalist look, so good for keeping clothes looking clean and giving oneself the ability to therefore carry less stuff 👍 I’ve been getting more into kinda like minimal earth tones over the years, like greens and browns, but sometimes i still like to rock some colors haha 🌈🌈
@asdf1234_.
@asdf1234_. Ай бұрын
@@highonmike haha yeah I still like having a variety of colors (more stuff than I need if I was being a true minimalist or if I was traveling light). But neutral colors and earthy colors that I like as well are easy to work together (I love greens too) and they seem to work fine with a base of all black basics/essentials (most of the time I'm boring and I like all black everything) Haha I used to wonder if it's emo/Gothic to wear all black everything. But that's just bc you often see those people dressed like that with black mascara and all that stuff I wouldn't do haha but if you wear basic timeless stuff (the minimalist quiet luxury aesthetic) you always look dripped out (as the kiddos say) in any of the basic colors you feel like wearing that day (while maintaining focus & simplicity when you get more out of less things like you said)

From what I’m seeing online, looks like many runners have started switching from traditional running shoes to barefoot sandals because it allows them run with natural human running form and is easier on the knees. I support the barefoot movement 🦶🏼🙏🏽

I started wearing barefoot shoes full time a while back, but I work at a factory, so I have to switch to steel toed boots when I’m out on the floor just for safety. The difference is crazy, I can’t get them off fast enough when I’m done with them. Only thing I’d add is don’t jump straight into it if you’re not used to walking around barefoot or with more minimal shoes. Especially if you walk on concrete a lot the first few weeks can get painful if you’re not accustomed and try for extended periods of time.
