F-14D with purposed upgrades was by far the best choice. Much better weapons, range and radar. Dick Cheney purposely ruined the deal to get McDonald Douglas the contract. If we bought the right aircraft back then, the f-18 would have been dropped and the navy would be consolidated. Navy fighters would be f-14s and f-35s, just like the army with the f-35s and f-15ex.

Broncos had been out of service for over half decade so I was shocked to see a few parked behind a hangar at a remote Nevada airfield. They were all painted in an unusual dark green hue that’s popular with sec ops dedicated squadrons nowdays. I loved the Bronco so I had to have a closer look and snap some pictures. When I got closer I noticed they all had M60 belly packs, no markings not even bueno #. Then I noticed all the patched bullet holes on the low side of airframes. Most were patched over with round tire patches. Several holes were fresh enough no patch no corrosion. I decided to put my camera away. Next day they were all gone. A few months later I ran into the four at a remote Central America airfield. Each one had a few extra fresh holes in them.

There's a lot of other platforms that sort of overlap with the job this does. Your idea of drones plus a bronco is probably going to be served by drones plus an f-35, plus the sky warden is the new hotness for propeller driven low altitude reconnaissance platforms. Also, you can't count out little bird being used for the special forces insertion and the low altitude strike capability, short runway is great but try no runway. None of them can really do the loiter time of course.

Just another plane that should not be retired but upgraded . Let's ditch the B52 and keep this plane it's faster with a bigger payload.
