The firm I work for has migrated so many times! It's a headache. I'm trying to set up my own firm so that I never have to migrate. What do you have against Tax Dome? That's what my employer currently uses. It's not my favorite but seems fine. Thanks.

I'm working on starting my own firm on the side right now. You only need a PTIN to do returns but if you want to help clients with tax problems to need a license. The Enrolled Agent license is enough and is a lot easier to get than a CPA. Oh, and PTIN stands for Paid Taxpreparer Identification Number.

I was in the Dreamfirms program with Enae. She's the smartest and the best and the hardest working person. I know the Dreamfirm program was incredible for both of our businesses. What we paid was a small fraction of our increased earnings even at first year and certainly overtime. just do it… You won't regret it.

100k in growth for a small CPA firm is astronomical under any circumstances . As someone who has helped over 4000 CPA’s grow their firms I know a thing or to about practice growth. Congratulations to both Alan and Tyler.

I know this "value pricing" idea is trendy right now among some tax accountants. But clients often find the idea of taking a portion of their tax savings for your profit to be distasteful, and as a tax professional I agree. What if you go to the auto mechanic for an inspection and they find that your timing belt is frayed and about to break, and they say, it'll take me a an hour to replace the timing belt, but I'm saving you from having to spend $4k for a new engine if I hadn't caught that, so I'm going to charge you $2k to for an hour of work on it. Or even worse, like what some accountants say you should do, if he said when I was changing your oil I found an issue that will destroy your engine and cost you $4k, but I won't tell you what it is or how to fix it unless you pay me $2k, then I'll tell you what I saw. There's nothing unique about accounting that makes this type of pricing appropriate for accountants any more than it is for any other type of service. But I know there are some people who say they're getting rich off of charging clients this way and some clients are willing to put up with it out of fear, ignorance, or lack of better options. So if this is what you want to do, you do you.

Ur all over the place with ur analysis (trying to cope). AICPA data is very clear. Less ppl are becoming CPAs. It’s pretty easy to see why if u look at about 5 metrics.

Question. I am a data analyst. 28 considering a masters in accounting (bridge program) since my work is flexible. All this in order to eventually purchase a firm. My question is 2 fold. 1) how many years of experience should I have as a CPA before purchasing a firm. 2) is this beneficial financially? (Work pays for school so I’d only pay 7K out of pocket)
@Greg_Chase2 ай бұрын
Good stuff! One thing that became ESSENTIAL in our business: 1) have a 'working capital' account with enough money to pay all bills for 6 months to 1 year 2) if you have this working capital account, it is EASY to be selective about taking on clients. The first two years, we had this mindset "we're new, we gotta take everybody" After enough 'unexpected outcomes' occurred, the only way to not get a feeling of desperation in the pit of the stomach about our recurring monthly bills was - to build up the working capital account. My goodness, it was a blessing after that. Sustaining the working capital account has been vital over time and allows us to say 'no, we can't take that client' .

No idea how I missed thi comment but spot on. I personally keep 90 days of OPEX on hand, but I can totally see 6 months being a good marker for a lot of firm owners given the cash fluctuations around tax deadlines. love all the points you made, especially the 'were new, we gotta take everyone' worry about making money first, worry about scaling and client selection first because you can keep your doors open.
