yes you paid for the sushi, but that doesn't mean have bad manners. Yes, you paid for your burger, but don't open your mouth and smack your lips when you eat it. Because you can't do anything you want in public if It ruins other people's enjoyment of the restaurant. to be courteous of others is not a hard ask.

Excellent question. In high-end sushi, there is a process often called Shikomi, which in the case of octopus, involves placing it in boiling salted water and immediately cooling it to bring out its genuine flavor!

Every region has it's own customs. For example, the chef in this video was taught that sushi should not be manipulated with chopsticks (that prohibition is not customary in many locations). The one binding element is a show of respect. Do things respectfully and every rookie mistake you make can be forgiven.

Every culture has its own way of etiquette at the table. Learning these habits shows respect and understanding of others. Think of table manners like traffic rules. They may be different in each country, but they keep everything running smoothly. Let’s keep it simple.

If the chef worries about a watch or jewellery would damage the bench top or fittings, then what about long sleeve shirts with metal cuff buttons or fashionable metallic baggy pants with chains and big metal zippers. They would be sharper than a watch bands or straps. At the end of the day, only allow T shirts, shorts and slippers would be safe. 😂

I got my hands on a Columbia River King salmon fillet today. On sale for $11.99 per pound. The fillet was 5.9 pounds, and will make some GREAT sushi! (the only way like salmon). The color is a natural red, so I'm betting it'll be *GREAT!*

Ridiculous. I am paying the restaurant to prepare food for me, so I should eat the way I want to as long as I am not reasonably bothering anyone. Sometimes the Japanese unnecessarily overdo things.

@fdama This is the commonly expected etiquette for high-end sushi restaurants in Japan. If you're visiting one of those, it is best to follow the chef's suggestions here. Otherwise I feel you will be disrespecting not only the restaurant but the other customers as well. If you are eating at sushi restaurants outside of Japan, or at more casual places even within Japan, then of course there are different expectations.

Manners are important and all of those manners explained have to do something with respect. Eating the food the way the chef intended means respecting him and his craft and art. Does it hurt you to just follow those simple rules if being asked for?

I'm sorry but this is borderline ridiculous. There are no set in stone "rules" to eating sushi. Sushi was originally a street food and not meant to be some kind of pretentious "dining experience" fettered with arbitrary rules and traditions. Sushi is food and should be enjoyed by the diner the way they choose to consume it. Real sushi chefs do take great pride in their craft and want you to enjoy their creations and couldn't care less if you did or didn't follow some silly protocols while dining.

a guy named Todd Davis feels the need to correct a video on sushi eating etiquette as informed by a michelin starred sushi chef. the death of expertise indeed. youre right though, nobody is kicking you out of the strip mall sushi express in waukesha, wisconsin if you dont remove your watch at the table. however for a michelin starred dining experience in japan, these would likely be considered "best practices" for that specific environment and culture. now if you would like to make a video on the preferred etiquette at an arby's drive through, i would be much more interested in deferring to your expertise on the matter
