Hi Nick. Thank you for your excellent video on the a7lv. As a Nikon Z landscape, product and wildlife photographer, I am researching a smaller camera for “travel”. My main concern is image sharpness and detail when printing 24”x36”. So far I’m looking at the A7IV or the A7R3. (I shoot stills only.) Do you have any recommendation on which Sony camera body would be best for me? Thanks!

If your focus is it being compact, then an A7Cii would be the best choice. I’ve printed quite a few 24x36 from my A7iv and they’ve come out amazingly, the best thing you can do is make sure that you use a tripod or appropriate shutter speed, and also go with a proper printing service as a cheap printing service wont get you the quality you want. You can also look at a A7CR as well but unless you’re cropping into your photos a ton, it’s unnecessary

Each film stock has its own own starting colour signature, and although it will change during the digitisation process, because the starting point was different, the end result will also be different. Matching exactly between film stocks would be nigh impossible.

The main problem of Nikon software is that it often clips highlights, I can say always! And you cant set white balance or have consistency on one session ( frames from same photo shoot have different colors)

I totally disagree with your opinion about lab scans. Personally I work in my lab and I use Fuji sp3000. Early 2000s scanner. It can produce for example BMP that is way better than jpg. The truth is that many labs aren’t giving a shizz about quality. Most of them don’t even correct scans, they just let the machine do the work.

Im not trying to be negative here, but I guess I don’t understand some of what’s going on in this video… First off, I was confused about how these negatives were captured and what scanner you had used, but I’ve since found out from the comments section. But Also, for the raw comparison you used Negative Lab Pro initially to make a positive version? so that already bypasses all the other software so I don’t really understand… then you color correct all these files yourself, and then compare all the edited files and say things like “I like the color on this one more” but that’s just because you edited that file in such a way, not because the software did a better job? Also I have to say, I have used Silverfast before and there is simply zero chance the iSRD was activated in those examples, it does a very good job and just needs default settings, and it looks like the dust wasn’t just partially removed but not removed at all, so I think there must have been some mistake there. Like if you captured a raw from a scanner even with the infrared information (in Silverfast’s language it would have to be a 64bit HDRi format), but then did the positive conversion in Negative Lab Pro, NLP wouldn’t be able to apply the iSRD, So I’m just really confused. Silverfast does not allow you to apply the iSRD and output a Raw, only a modified tiff or jpeg. This is a shortcoming when you want to use NLP for final editing/conversion because you can’t easily apply the dust removal with Silverfast before hand. All that said, thank you for the videos. Always good to have more videos from the film photography community.

A very strange review and strange conclusions. We were not told what settings the scanning was done with. Not long ago, I was choosing the best program to work with my Nikon Coolscan. After spending about a month, I finally came to the conclusion that Nikon Scan gives the most accurate result! The main condition was to get an accurate scan of the film without using subsequent processing. In Nikon Scan, this can be done. In the other two programs, it seemed to me that this was impossible. The only thing I used was Cool Ice. In Nikon Scan, this system showed itself the best. Next, I process the image in Photoshop. First, I subtract the orange mask, after which I invert the image. Next, I set the black and white points, after which I find the gray point. After these basic operations, I already carry out more subtle correction and retouching. At the output, I get an excellent result. Yes, it takes some time, but it's worth it! It must be remembered that negative film has low contrast in stock. This is done to compensate for this when printing on contrast paper. Accordingly, it is necessary to make a correction for contrasts by reproducing the characteristic curve of the photo paper during editing. For some reason, you do not do this, but simply try to correct some individual parts of the image, while everything else does not have sufficient contrast. I think editing scans in Lightroom is not a very good idea because this program is primarily designed to work with pictures from digital cameras. Also, many Lightroom tools do not work as well as in Photoshop. What you call a large number of details when working with VueScan is actually the result of the sharpening filter. The pictures show how roughly it works. In Photoshop, I can do the same thing, only much more delicately. Unfortunately, even if you want to digitize family photos, you will still have to spend time and learn to understand the basic principles of this process. Each frame is a creative work and there is no other way.

I'm cleaning out an old workstation upstairs and discovered my Nikon LS-5000 ED with Magazine feeder SF-210 and SA-21 I have the cords and CD but haven't found the manual or box yet. What would this be worth? It has very very little use probably less than 100 slides. I'm thinking of taking it to a used camera exchange / purchase event.

When you touch your fingertip (or preferably a cleaning cloth) to the surface of the mirror, side A will show your fingertip pressed right up next to it, while side B will always show a gap. When assembled, only one side of the mirror touches the metal clip. Using the above reference, is it side A or side B that presses up against the metal clip?

do you prefer the iv or the 4000. do you notice a difference in picture quality?
@nickschraml

I haven’t ran a comparison scan between the two since in theory the 4000 has way better specs (higher resolution, dmax, and bit depth), but the big thing for me is the 4000 can scan an entire roll whereas the iv is limited to one strip at a time

I find these criticisms of Sony rather hilarious when Canon and Nikon are equally as bad and heartless as any other tech company. These companies exist to serve their shareholders, not to be your friend. There's a reason why Sony managed to become the 2nd largest in market share, and it wasn't because Canon and Nikon were giving customers what they wanted. Canon blocking 3rd parties from producing any lenses completely killed any chance of me considering them as a brand. Which was sad, because growing up, all I've had were Canon Point and Shoots.

Sony is still the same heartless consumer electronics company they were in the 80's. Never honor a warranty, always blame the customer, hold your equipment hostage, and make sure you hold it long enough that you are likely to just buy a new replacement rather than wait weeks or months to get your warranty denied repair completed.

If you're going to compare, then you need not do those editing.. the raw output from each scan is what matters and not your edited version cuz we're not goin to edit the same way.. I personally think the editing was irrelevant to the video.. What film were those shot on? I noticed different scanners have different rendering to different film and not a one size fit all thing

I would suggest anyone to just download a trial version of VueScan or Silverfast. These will come with alternative Nikon drivers that will work on Windows 7 and higher and solve a few bugs as well. Especially if you have the regular USB models. Nikonscan will work fine with these drivers; drivers won't expire.

Finally someone who gets it, speaks out and makes a video on the whole "look hype" ;) Fully agree. It's more all the other factors during the process that give any film its "look", rather than the film itself. And definitely every film is different - even between the same STOCK sometimes or 120/35/sheet...but not in the "look" as many people think.
