I heard Reiner and the CSO play this live during the time this recording was made, as I heard them every week during Reiner's tenure. It is remarkable that he could call forth such bursts of energy with such an economical conducting style. Reiner conducted most concerts by far; guests were rather rare. So, he built and trained the orchestra. A few years later, as a student of Mr. Herseth, I played in the Civic Orchestra, in which Reiner's influence could be felt, because most of us studied with CSO members, and we attended their concerts (for free!).

This is a RCA-Victor Living Stereo Shaded Dog Label LP Deep Grooved Stampers 3S/1S produced in the in scant period, roughly from 1958 to 1963, the beginning of the stereo era - pure Valve amplification helped produce recordings demonstrating unparalleled fidelity and warmth, lifelike presence and midband illumination.

Heard this completely musical recording on RAI radio 3 Classic just 2 hours ago...in Morocco, was beguiled...enchanted at the marvelous collaboration, never heard such loving balance and music making between orchestra and soloist..have been immersed in this repertoire since hearing Cliburm and Kondrashin.....this performance far more musical and complete than practically any....

Crystal clear sounds, crisp, driving rhythms and evocative of an Iberian landscape. I can imagine being there through this exotic music.

Having just one functioning ear I live in a monaural world, so talk of space and position is lost on me. However, I still derive great pleasure from listening to this particular recording. I have always found the image on the record sleeve absolutely enchanting. A blissful, captured moment.

I am grateful for this precise description by contributer.Now while hearing 1st mov, I'm enormously impressed with the ways of tacting 1st subject by Skrowaczewski.Along with movements going on, I can hear tresparent musical structure throughout,moreover, that represents extreme beauty and musical waves like breath with colorful brilliant sound intensely. In the end I lost my words to express about this utter musical monument.
ecco, ascolti questa esecuzione del mitico rach3, ascoltato e riascoltato anche troppe volte... e invece scopri di non averlo mai ascoltato.

I've been having a love story with his concerto for a few years and have listened to many interpretations of this by different pianists. I've not come across an interpretation that spoke to me more than Argerich's playing. This is the first time this concerto has come alive for me again and has moved me in every way imaginable. Berman has done a marvellous job here. The concerto really speaks and is alive in every way 🌹❤

Up there with the young Gavrilov's interpretation, ossia cadenza and all. I used to prefer Ashkenazy and Previn but wish they were more allegro and less andantino, even with the the fabulous technique.

Every time I come across a "new" recording by Lazar Berman I discover a pianist of immense technical capacities at disposal of poetry. He could have played every piece faster a more neatly than anyone else but it would have been a bad service to music. Give me music, give me Berman!

This is Da Best!! The only version which I get from the pianist a good grasp of the architecture of the music, with the right amount of emotion, and where the performance show it to be worthy to stand alongside the great D minor concerti of Bach, Mozart and Brahms as, not a warhorse for virtuosi, but as a symphony for piano and orchestra. Berman is an undeservedly underrated musician.
Nice recording, Thanks Ravel is NOT an impressionist composer, he is... Ravel ;-)

My ideal of how an orchestra ought to sound. Reiner a tyrant? Perhaps, but what a legacy in sound we have to still enjoy so many years on. Thanks.
@marvieachanzar46742 жыл бұрын
Hi Anacort, I am sure you must have listened to "SCHEHERAZADE" recorded at the Orchestra Hall, Chicago in 1964. Fritz Reiner / CSO which is the most definitive conducting. Tyranny then, must be one of the main ingredients to any masterpiece.
