Historically, racism has impacted every U.S. institution, including the NBA. You may be too young to know that they changed the rules when Wilt entered the Association to reduce his dominance. During much of Kareem's career the referees did not call fouls committed against him as they should have. This allowed Dave Cowens to fair much better against Kareem than would have been the case if the games were officiated fairly. Kareem did not start in as many All Star games as he should have because the fans would consistently vote in Dan Issel. Mr. Issel did not make either the NBA's 50th or 75th anniversay teams.

Michael Jordan's claim to fame is playing basketball and maybe marketing athletic foot ware, not evaluating talent. If MJ were great at knowing who can play and who can't, the Hornets would have accomplished more under his direction. I'm not saying Bird wasn't a very good player. My opinion differs from yours. I remember when Bird was injured the Celtics went on this long winning streak WITHOUT HIM. When Bird came back he had to come off the bench. I believe McHale was the force on those teams. In any event, Bird had two teammates that made BOTH the 50th and 75th anniversary teams. He also had Dennis Johnson, who should have made at least one of those teams. I neglected to include that Wilt led the NBA in field goal percentage 5 times. Putting Bird in the same class as Wilt and Wayne Gretzky is overrating him. I maintain that Bird did not deserve the 1983-84 MVP. It should have gone to Bernard King. With no other player that would eventually be inducted into the HOF, King took the Celtics to 7 games while being guarded by McHale, a top defensive player. 4 players on that Celtic team are in the HOF and Johnson should be on the 75 year team.

Good try but you have no center....Mikan is the obvious choice as he is a top 20 player but Walton would work too...Got to bump Barry which is difficult but he is not beating out Bird. the lowest guy on the all-time list from your group is Stockton...not a top 50 player... Kareem said the best player he ever played against was Larry Bird - not Jordan, not Wilt - because of his mind; James Worthy said he'd rather guard Jordan then Bird for the same reason. Both Rodman and Thomas are on KZbin talking about how Bird torched them. They only made their statements in the moment out of anger and frustration because the Celtics had just sent them home again. Bird could have made a big deal about the whining but just blew it off, saving both of them from a world of backlash. This whole video is fundamentally racist. No one ever said Bird played dirty, just hard; Lambeer played dirty. Dirk, Steve Nash, Mikan, Cousy, Havelicek, Walton, Pettit, Luka, ...

Please send me the link where Kareem says Bird was the best player with whom he competed. There is a video somewhere where Kareem said Bird was the smartest competitor Kareem ever faced. Michael Jordan said Bird was the dirtiest when he appeared on Oprah Winfrey during his playing days. I neglected to mention that Wilt led the Association in field goal percentage 5 times. Bird led the Association only in free throw percentage. Take a look at the all time NBA leaders in various categories. The way some of you guys feel about Bird makes me think his name should appear a lot more frequently and closer to the top than it does. Perhaps you couldn't tell but back then the announcing of the games was biased in Bird's favor. I maintain that Bird did not deserve the MVP for the 83-84 season. The Celtics had 4 players in the HOF three of whom are on the 75 year team and a fourth, Dennis Johnson, should be on the 75 year team. Nevertheless, Bernard King, with no other player that would eventually be inducted into the HOF, took that team to 7 games while being guarded by one of the best defensive players in the Association, Kevin McHale. If you still think I am wrong, maybe you're right. Being wrong doesn't mean that I'm biased.

This was a stupid premise from the beginning, and not worth 20 minutes of your time. First, trying to disguise the overt racism by calling them "Whyte" players is an offense to all basketball players, be they black, white or brown. Remember there was a time (not so long ago) when the best black college players couldn't get scholarships to most NCAA teams. It wasn't for lack of ability, clearly. It was based solely on skin color. What if all left-handers were banned? Or all players over 6'8" or under 5'6"? How about anyone named Johnson? Or Jones? or Smith? Doesn't that sound ridiculous? No more so than this "Whyte" thing.

Bird is a hands down - I put him at floating PF/SF. Havliceck and McHale alternating at the other forward slot. Perhaps Griffen as the last backup - I want someone that played when defense existed which makes it tougher. Walton WHEN he is healthy, backed up by Cowens for center. Dirk was a good outside shot (much less for a center) but otherwise not as overall impactful. West at SG - playoffs mastery matters! Backed up by Louis Dampier (though he didn't play in the NBA during his prime, he DID play in the league his last 2-3 years). Stockton backed by Cousy at PG.

If you can find any interview, anywhere, that shows Jordan claiming that Bird played dirty, I'd love to see it because i don't believe it. Jordan has said that Larry was the only player with no holes in his game. One big incorrect statement you made that i shall correct... Rodman was the guy who said if bird was black he"d be considered more average as a player. Thomas was a good captain who decided he should just back up his teammate, even if he didn't believe it, so he said he agreed with Rodman. There is no other time that I've ever found that Thomas said anything negative about Larry. He tells stories about how he was in awe of things Larry did. Also, years later Rodman said that he 'couldn't believe that as a younger man he disparaged Larry like that' now that he was older and smarter and really understood how good Larry was. Larry never led the league in FG%.... no kidding. High volume mid range shooters don't lead the league in Fg%. Guys who live in the paint do. Never ked the league in points average. Yeah.... that's because he liked to spread the wealth and let his teammates eat, too. Are you aware, though, that Larry shot 50.0/39.8/90.6 over his last 8 seasons, putting up 25.6/9.5/6.9? Those are not the numbers of an overrated player

“The Black community “… stop right there. Please. Don’t generalize. Media driven narratives. There’s not a consensus vote… especially in regards to athletes, sports. Fans hated the Celtics as a franchise… the media already set the narrative, Bird versus Magic.. I love the game of basketball… not a fanboy. Many of my generation felt the same. Bird was “nice” and legendary before he came to the NBA. Basketball fans knew how good Bird was. Just like we knew how good other white players were good in that era… All of us understand the media bias, that is real, and always has been. Social media has exaggerated the narrative… another frustration of the OG fans… most of us didn’t hold any prejudice or bias against white basketball players. I will light heartedly agree that many black OG fans have stereotypes, and will express them out loud, … “that white boy athletic AF”…. and we already believe all white guys can shoot. lol.

There is both jealousy and some racism by some of the black WNBA players who can't stand the fact that a white girl plays better than them (as a rookie!0. I think Isiah was jealous when the Celtics /Larry beat them over and over again before the Pistons rose to the top. If I was an established WNBA player, I might have a problem with that. And, I don't think that's jealousy or racism. I do, however, admire how Clark has taken the backlash in stride. That's what's so great about living in America. Everyone has a right to their opinion no matter how racially biased or prejudice it sounds. You know what they say.... "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one. I have to correct you on a fact check about you claiming Bird was drafted in 1979. As a matter of fact, he was drafted after the completion of his junior year at ISU, because the rules then were that a player only had to be 4 years passed his original time of collegiate enrollment. After signing with Bob Knight's Indiana Hoosiers, Larry dropped out after 28 days due to the size and lack of necessities a poor kid stricken with poverty could handle, so he went back home and collected a paycheck working as a trash collector for the city's street department. He didn't go to Boston to play in 1979 opting to return for his senior year at the smaller ISU with it being so close to home and he promised momma he would graduate. Magic will tell you himself that Larry deserved the rookie of the year over himself due to the NBA's biggest win/lose record turnaround for a franchise in league history. My personal opinion is that Bird wass a very good defensive player with his rebounding and superior basketball IQ having performed what I believe to be the single greatest defensive play of all-time with the legendary steal in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals of 1987 against Detroit. Also I'd like to add that though Bernard King was a very good solid offensive threat, he couldn't tie Larry Birds shoes. Bird's easily a top 10 all-time NBA player at #7 on my list of greatest players in the history of the league.

Bird had success as a rookie but Magic won the title. Robert Parish, who is also on the NBA's 75 year team, was on Boston before Bird. Maybe the team had been greatly underperforming. I don't remember identifying the year Bird was a rookie but I know that Bird and Magic were eligible for rookie of the year in the same year. Please direct me to the video in which Magic says Bird deserved the award. I want to see a video from that time, not anything recent. They are friends now and Magic rarely takes the low road. Regarding Bird's defense, teams used to run plays for whomever Bird was guarding. If Bird's defensive skills were so great, why is it he never guarded the other team's top offensive threat, such as Wilkins, King, Worthy, Marcus Johnson, etc.? In the year that Bird won the MVP that should have gone to King, the NBA players voted King MVP. In any list of the greatest NBA players of all time voted on by the players that played against Bird or the Blk players, Bird will not place as high as he will on lists voted on by fans such as you or the media.

@@sportsactuary8574 Bird joined a 29 win team and led them to 61 wins and a Conference Final as a rookie. Now let me correct you. Bird led the 1980 celtics to that conference final playing with 4 of the celtics' leaders in minutes played from the previous season, and they lost to an excellent 59 win division rival in Philly. After that season they traded their #1 pick to Golden state for Parish and the #3 pick, which wound up being McHale. So, not only was Parish not in Boston when Larry started to turn the Celtics fortunes, but in 1980 Parish's warriors finished 24-58. Magic joined a good playoff ready team that was already winning 47 games the previous year and helped the Lakers win a championship in his rookie season, but Kareem was the driving force and mvp of that team. Kareem had a fantastic first 5 games in the finals but did not travel to Philly for game 6 after brutally injuring his ankle in game 5. They wanted someone present to accept the finals mvp award, so they gave it to magic because he had one phenomenal showing in game 6 playing center for Kareem. If it was even remotely close trying to decide between Bird and Magic for ROY, Bird would not have won by a margin as wide as 63-3. Are you aware the Larry was 1st team all nba and 4th in league mvp voting in that rookie season?

Pay had gone up a *lot* vs inflation by the time Russell or Wilt entered the league, ANY starter and most subs were making MORE than skilled professionals like plumbers and electricians.

i'm still NOT 100% certain about the future at 16:49 and 16:38 in my OPINION these legends individual stats go in this order the #1 scoring from kareem abdul-jabbar #2 scoring from michael jordan #3 passing from magic johnson #4 scoring from larry bird #5 shotblocking from hakeem olajuwon #6 shotblocking from kareem abdul-jabbar THEREFORE in my OPINION the 1980 rookie of the year SHOULD'VE been magic johnson and MOST IMPORTANTLY the 1980 1982 and 1987 finals mvp without any doubt AT ALL SHOULD'VE been kareem abdul-jabbar

You need a center. Bill Walton is the obvious choice with Dave Cowens backing him up. John Havlicek, Pete Maravich, and Bob Cousy are on the team too.

Id go with Cowens ONLY due to Walton's health issues. Walton was better but he spent SO much time hurt.

@@averyce2 Exactly why I'd pick him over Walton - and Walton's HEALTH is the only reason. If I could take a HEALTHY Walton, that's who I'd go with.
