Thanks for a great discussion. Do you have examples of European Mountain Guide Associations offering single discipline guide qualifications, in particular to become a ski guide initially? In Europe it seems very hard to get started on most guide schemes until you already have a very high level in all 3 disciplines. So the route that Sam describes of becoming a ski guide first and then developing the other disciplines doesn’t seem to be an option. The AMGA seems more flexible in that respect.

Hi guys, great podcast! Just a little note, the Alps are not falling apart. I live between Mont Blanc and Matterhorn and the Alps are fine, the hiking, skiing, climbing and mounteneering are all amazing here. Our glaciers suffer just as any other glaciers in the world and we do what we can to protect them.

Why don't you post the podcast with the video? Obviously there is some video because I found this through a post on alex's instagram which had the video. I much prefer watching podcasts and being able to see the people who are speaking. If I was just going to listen to it I'd use Spotify so I wouldn't have to have my phone open the whole time

P.S. I'm not trying to hate or anything just confused why you wouldn't include footage

For the record...I could listen to Jim Morrison for hours and hours, grief can be all to consuming and I admire Jims strength to move forward in such horrific tradegy!!! The loss of his wife and kids and then losing Hilaree Nelson is catastrophic but his inner strength to celebrate all of them by staying true to what inspires....(The mountains) ....As for the film ...Earthside , everyone should watch it if they havent.....its an amazing documentary with the Brette Harrington and her sister (just kidding) and Hilaree...truly inspirational !! Ps congrats on your fatherhood....cheers, 1000 islands Canada...ps Shout out to Jeremy jones and kids inviting Jim out skiing....afterall how could he possibly say NO....lol Be safe and as Hilaree always shouted...Always keep exploring!!!

regarding the icefall-- i watched ryan mitchell's 5 hour vlog/documentary of his climb and i was absolutely mortified by how awful the conditions were at the end of the season in particular. it's actually miraculous that no one died given how absurdly unsafe some sections were.

Do people really go in with an attitude that the joy and accomplishment of climbing the mountain is worth risking death? I don't think so, they have a belief that it won't happen to them

Great convo fellas! I just did my first Colorado 13er in below 0 conditions and it was super fun, looking to progress. Even for a 13er I still picked up the inreach plus I upgraded to an iPhone that has sos for extra coverage. One thing I’ll say before anyone tosses their inreach is that garmin uses a larger more redundant satellite system so it could potentially provide better satellite communication than iPhone sos or android sos which is coming soon

AMEN to all of the inspiring insights, sharing and feeling of being grateful for the most simple joys our environment can provide 🙏 I’m nearly 60 living in New Zealand exploring and experiencing the most satisfying moments of my life being alone in spectacular mountain locations. Jim provides such an amazing and admirable example of coming to terms with the tragedies then some how finding the strength and drive to write the next ‘book’ Thanks Adrian and Sam on behalf of all listeners for showing the sensitivity and respect of true friends talking with Jim. Ngā mihi 🙏

Super interesting 👌 thx. Cool u shouted out Alan Arnette🎉 I'm a fan of him & his 19yr old client Ryan Mitchell, who posted stunning day by day raw footage of his successful Everest summit & descent w Madison Mountaineering. It's on Ryan's (self-named) yt channel
@glory59185 ай бұрын
watched Ryan's channel last night after his interview with a prior Everest Summit eer ( you'll find the interview with a search). So is this where Ryan got the idea for his next Everest venture to attempt to Summit w/o a guide and O2? He told the interviewer since he now knows the route he doesn't need a guide. Right Ryan ! One Summit, and you're the expert and confident you know the way. Sounds far too risky.

@glory5918 I think ur referring to his interview w Alan Arnette. And yes I was devastated when I heard Ryan's new goal. I think it's pure idiocy. But if u listen to Adrian talk in this podcast, he makes it sound like u can't be a pro if u use O2.... so I guess this is who Ryan is listening to. I wholeheartedly concur with YOU.

Sam - please don't drag in other parts of society when discussing the sexual abuse problem in climbing. Of course, it's everywhere but to mention it in this context spreads the problem out and weakens the importance of it here. The laser focus should be on what the climbing community can do about healing itself. True allyship is what Adrian is talking about, and not holding back. Adrian - if you think you haven't been brave yet, I bet you can find ways that bravery of this type is actually on offer if you're willing to lend your voice, and I know that you know what actual bravery is. For activists it happens when something impossible must be done for which there is no other choice but to push forward, even though it might take every molecule of spirit and strength and vinegar and tears to do it. I've been enjoying DangerStik and appreciate you very much.

Couldn’t you just do red blood cell doping, which admittedly is a rules violation in professional sports, but climbing Everest isn’t really a professional sport.

I wish anybody, somebody that goes to Everest, either as support or climber, would talk about the bad things and report on them. There has to be lots of different types of crime when you have so many people from different cultures, countries and morals. The fact that the south side can have as many as 1,500 people, there has to be more than food or cylinders stolen. Im not looking for negativity, Im looking for truth. There has to be more than death! Excited to find your channel. Best of luck with it. I sub'd.
@blakebarone18095 ай бұрын
It’s humanity. Do we really need to go into that? 1,500 people together, they’ll be some petty theft, some drinking, drug use, people will fornicate, perhaps even with someone who isn’t their spouse, some anguish, etc. that’s the negative.
