@ When I go rail-fanning in Auburn, Sumner and Puyallup, will be seeing pumpkins and cabbages. (Uncle Pete runs on the Milwaukee Road’s old tracks-doesn’t start using the old NP until Tacoma.)

The house we grew up in stood less than 100 yards from 2 sets of tracks. So, we lived with this sound around the clock. But, my favorite memory happened on an early summer morning, when the Ringling Brothers circus train broke down by our house. The entire day was magical. Everybody was so kind and friendly to us. And, we even got our own personal animal parade & mini circus performance in the field alongside the tracks. We were allowed to pet & help feed the animals as they brought them out for some exercise & grazing. Although I have always loved elephants, that was the day I fell in love with a giraffe. I had never seen anything that tall looking down at me. The engine had broken down, so the train was stuck there the entire day. Although we were quite poor, my mom sent us to the store for 5lbs of bologna & several loaves of bread. She ground the bologna & mixed in some of her homemade relish & mayonaise, and we made a wagon full of sandwiches to feed everyone lunch. It was nearly nightfall when the train finally pulled away, as we waved goodbye to the wonderful friends we had made that day. I was 6 or 7 at the time. But, at 60, I still replay that memory in my mind as if it were happening at that moment. Now that I'm all grown, and dealing with serious health problems, when I hear the haunting whistle & clacking of a distant train in the night, I lay and wonder if, when it's my time to go, will that old circus train return to pick me up at the end of my journey?
