What people don't realize criticizing a runner for struggling to get to the finish line. I just became a runner 4 years ago and I've seen people struggle. A lot can happen to you that can affect your performance. I've even seen runners collapse and needed to be medically taken out. That's why this sport is all about respect and those two made sure they helped this struggling woman get to the finish line

*What most people don't realize is that anything under 4 hours is pretty legit. I just did a marathon and did it in over 7 hours.*

"TraumaER" I guess a lot of people who don't know much about marathon running ( and/or are extreme purists) think in terms of what the most elite athletes can do, finish a 26.2 mile marathon in just about 2 hours for men, and two hours 20 minutes for women. Anyone who does less than that is just a wimp.. When I ran my very first marathon back in the early 1990s I finished just slightly under 3 hours and 45 minutes. I thought it was awful timing but I mostly trained only on weekends and I rarely ran more than about 8 miles at a time at that. I had not yet gotten up to training by running 26 miles a few times a week. Very far from that kind of training.. When I decided to try a complete marathon I had occasionally done some 20-mile races but mostly I figured that what would try the 26.2 by just going as far and as fast I can and if I have to stop and quit or walk the rest of the way, I would. I was just giving it a try. I realize now that time was quite darn good for an average person who just decided to give it a go. I never got to do it again though. I started getting breathing problems of unknown origin ( maybe the pollution in the city) and though I kept jogging and running for years I could never participate in marathons again. Now my genetics catgut up with me. I developed arthritis which one doctor told me was just genetic and nothing that I did really "caused" it. Double hip replacement may be in the future.

@@obscurelyvague don't stop running. The day you stop running is the day you start dying. I'm doing 11 races this year from 5K to Half. Setting PRs all year. My big issue is to run with less effort if that makes sense. I need to become more efficient. I can do well in 5Ks. Got 30th 2 weeks ago out of 200+ runners. Did a Half last month and got around middle with a sub 2:30 time.

@@TraumaER The problem is that sometimes the human body just cannot take it any more physically. I have a friend who says she has had friends who were active runners or joggers but they had to quit on doctors orders because their injuries or pain or bones would not get better but would get worse. Someone once told me that her boy friend tried to become a runner but just got a lot of stress fractures and could not keep it up. Some people are just not meant to take up running like certain other people can and not necessarily competitive running.. Sometimes a person can tolerate it while younger but cannot keep doing it when older or there will be worsening of injuries and pain. Ryan Hall reportedly retired early from running because the intense training was doing harm. Very much the same for Tegla Laroupe. Paula Radcliffe developed such foot arthritis that she had to retire.

@@obscurelyvague when I got back into racing in 2019 and did my first race which was a 100K, i had multiple foot injuries and bad plantar Fasciitis. But I kept pushing. I have no issues now and focus on keeping my running form as perfect as possible with lots of mid foot striking. I see chiropractor once a month for spinal issues. I also broke both my ankles in my early 20s from sports. What helped me a lot was losing bodyweight and some muscle to get into running shape.

You honestly never know how your body is going to be on any given day. If you wakeup already not feeling well, then it's probably best to not jump in a 26.2 mile marathon, but it's hard for runners to do that, cause they'd have to wait a whole year for the next one after all that training they previously put in.

If you look at the time, she's clearly a high level runner who just had a bad day.
@Drewb18c16 жыл бұрын
Given her time, she qualified for it, which means she's actually a badass marathoner and has likely run many marathons in preparation of even getting a qualifying time. Almost nobody actually qualifies their first time and youd have to be a crazy natural to even get it in your first couple. Most runners take years to get to that level. What probably happened is she was pushing herself to get another qualifying time for the following year's Boston Marathon and it just wasn't her day, but she pushed herself too hard regardless. What's really sad is she literally JUST missed the time (assuming she's under 35). 3:35 is the time for women under 35 and she'd have made it if the guy didn't put her down to symbolically walk across the finish line (that's how close she was to 3:35 lol). That is if the BAA doesnt disqualify you for not crossing entirely under your own power.

I love the sportsmanship, but I hope she didn't get a medal as she unfortunately didn't cross the finish line under her own power. Maybe I don't know the whole story, but the look on her face at the end reads disappointed..... I hope she has the opportunity to return as she clearly worked her butt off to earn the right to toe the line!!!
