The spirit-whatever that might mean-seems to move through Jeff in this video, especially at the end of Sailing Through. His jaw unhinges like a snake’s, his eyes are possessed. I think about this video almost every time I sing; it changed everything I thought I knew about music and performance

I just watched the music tapes in athens yesterday, and he mentioned being younger playing on this stage, and how its just as magical, and its just one big dream he once never believed could happen. He told a story about floating oatmeal that would turn into a moon over athens georgia one night showing how beautiful everyone really is and that he could see it on all of us. I was the first to talk to him after the show and i gave him a painting i did of him and he said i was amazing and hugged me. It was maybe the happiest i have ever been, if not the happiest in a while. Love to julian!!!!!!!!

I was born 2 months before this video was filmed. They’ve been one of my favorite bands of all time since I was in 8th grade. This album helped me so much and I eventually saw NMH live in Charlottesville, VA in 2015. Amazing band, life changing album.

@@SonicJaneStooge i knew him way before heroin. heroin wasnt on anyones radar at that time in our circles. he was a cheerful, playful, optimistic person who was generous, loved music, and was really into health food. there was a hole in his heart because of his mother who was emotionally absent. but he was a very cheerful optimistic person. he used to say to me though, 'art is not eternal'. but in a million years i never imagined he would later become so dark, i dont know what broke his heart but something did... we lost touch when i was 17 after having a lot of really great philosophical talks and good times.

I think it’s about being an immortal rock star like Elvis or bob dylan but realizing those days are over and gone and as great as the songs are and ambition there it’s just not possible to achieve that level based on great songwriting but don’t tell that to Beyoncé but even that is besides the point

Ghost, ghost I know you live within me Feel as you fly In thunder clouds above the city Into one that I Loved with all that was left within me Until we tore in two Now wings and rings And there're so many waiting here for you And she was born in a bottle-rocket 1929 With wings that rings around a socket Right between her spine All drenched in milk and holy water pouring from the sky I know that she will live forever She won't ever die And she goes And now she knows she'll never be afraid To watch the morning paper blow into a hole Where no one can escape (De de de de de) And one day in New York City baby A girl fell from the sky From the top of a burning apartment building Fourteen stories high And when her spirit left her body How it split the sun! I know that she will live forever All goes on and on and on and She goes And now she knows she'll never be afraid To watch the morning paper blow into a hole Where no one can escape (De de de de de)

Jeff Mangum is nothing if not sincere. I admire the passion on display in his music. As I've gotten older, I've become more attuned to how emotionally resonant NMH's lyrics are even though they're abstract and seemingly nonsensical. "Sailing Through" especially makes a lot more sense to me now after all the relationship troubles I've had over the years. I can _feel_ what he's getting at in a way that goes beyond mere words.

I was at this show, my first time ever hearing what they do. I can affirm your idea, I think the crowd was all taking it in and it was madness. I mean, any club show can be or become that, but this was so different than anything I'd ever seen, freewheeling, powerful, carelessly perfect and sometimes an absolute shambling mess of beauty. It was jaw-dropping and sublime. One of the best rock shows I've seen in a career of chasing the moment. I've read a tour diary where they said they were keeping all the door money from the tour in a paper bag and someone lost like $6K cash money. Pretty sure the whole show is still on youtube, soundcheck and all.
