He was petty and childish and selfish when it came to raising his kids. And to his wife he was only semi decent. I cant remember a time he went above for his family, the only thing you can give him credit for is staying with them and not abandoning his wife to raise them by herself but thats kind of bare minimum. Every time he tries to teach his kids a lesson he just ends up hurting them and its seen as humor but its not really funny. I know its just a tv show but good dad representation matters. He only does things out of convenience for himself and that trickles down to the rest of his family. I can’t specifically list all the reasons but i know one of the things that irked me while watching was how he treated his children when it came to them having sex. Kicking junior out of the house even though he was 17 was extreme and crying when he thought Claire lost her virginity was so weird. he’s obsessed with their purity but is a hypocrite because when it comes to talking about sex with their mom he doesn’t even try to hide it and the innuendo’s are constant so i don’t know how he expected his kids to act. I understand that he was a teen dad and hes scared of that happening but he could have practiced teaching his kids safe sex instead he drove his oldest into being a teen dad so he still failed. Another thing that may be in part with him having kids at 16 is how selfish he is, its making it hard to finish watching the series. I just feel bad for his family. The way he treats Jay when she gains weight is also sad to watch- constantly making fat jokes to her face, calling other women pretty in front of her making her insecure about herself. and then guilt tripping her into staying home was also not the best “I love you so I want whats best for you” move, instead when he was listing reasons why she should stay home it was so he could have food for him on the table when hes home from work and more sex. its so annoying how much value he places on sex it almost cheapens their relationship in a way. Claire had the higher paying job and better job working with stocks and when she gives it up( for him!!) he then starts making jokes about withholding her allowance from him if she doesn’t do whatever specific thing he wants in that moment. So many other things i could say about him but matter of the fact is i don’t like his character. It may be because the show is over 20 years old and times have changed, so maybe in the 2000’s standards he was a good dad but now that would really be a poor excuse for a great father/ family man. EDIT: Im going to list some of the weird things that the dad did. getting his wife drunk to sleep with her. Forces Jay to quit her job and school to stay home. pushing Kady into a pond because hes mad that his wife made him miss a baseball game I also believe he was so protective of Claire because he hyper sexualized other women and knows he would do the same to her if she wasn’t his daughter. the way he views women in general is borderline misogynistic. 5)turning Juniors room into his personal second room and making him sleep in the garage.
