Everyone has mentioned Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind, but For Your Consideration is also terrific!

Yes! Excellent pick! Jane is also in the wonderful MASCOTS from 2016. Another ensemble comedy mockumentary from Christopher Guest with overlap of some of the cast of this one. Add it to your movie reaction list!

Most of the movie was improvised with little or no planning. Fred Willard was specifically instructed by Christopher Guest not to do any research on dogs, but Jim paddock he did learn about dogs so he could sound knowledgeable. When the hotel manager is talking about the band roasting a goat, that’s a nod to Spinal Tap which of course Christopher guest and Michael McLean were Spinal Tap..

Fred Willard was perfectection in this role.

You forgot the hotel manager was also in Spinal Tap - he was the drummer who died in the "bizarre gardening accident".

You kinda look like an Australian version of Thew Adams and sound like him fused with Guru Larry/Larry Bundy Jr, also its entirely possible Tyler is my new neighbour and I don't make a big deal about it if he is.

The director Christopher Guest is married to actress Jamie Lee Curtis. They have been married since the mid eighties. I'm surprised he didn't cast her in any of his mockumentaries.

Love This Film. _This is Spinal Tap_ (Guest, McKean, and even Fred Willard) kicked off this genre of mocku-films, but _Best in Show_ is my favorite.

As someone who shows dogs… NO winning doesn’t mean you win any substantial amount of money 😂 Most shows you win nothing at all but a ribbon. A big show like this might have a small monetary prize but nothing crazy. I’ve been competing with my dogs for 10 years. We won $10 at our first show and that’s the only time I’ve ever won cash lmao.

Fun fact: during its initial run back in the UK, this was voted the best comedy show on TV at their equivalent of the Emmy's. Not the best kids comedy show, the best comedy show: period.

Nice! Got to love the Christopher Guest mockumentaries. As mentioned in other comments you got to hit the trilogy of Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind. Honorable mention also to the sort of granddaddy of them all This is Spinal Tap co-written by Guest and directed by Rob Reiner.

Loved the reaction. I agree with the folks below that you should watch Waiting for Guffman (my favorite of the 3) and A Mighty Wind. A lot of the actors are in all three, but there are also some new faces who pop in and out. They also mix up the pairings Willard and O'Hara are a couple in Guffman for example. The actors work with an outline and develop the scenes in rehearsal and they also do improvise some bits here and there. The exchange with Fred Willard and Bob Balaban: the joke is that Willard is both conflating the stories of The Pilgrims (who arrived on The Mayflower) and Columbus who had the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria and also getting the facts just a bit wrong.

My understanding of Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries is that the actors work off an outline vs a script. So you are correct, there is a lot of improvisation in these movies.

Such a classic. Ditto to everyone that suggested the holy triumvirate of Waiting for Guffman and Mighty Wind. Btw: These are hugely popular with a certain slice of America, but… they were never mainstream. Not surprised you’ve never heard of them. In my mind… This is the truest example of the “American comedy” contribution. Chris Guest films, Wet Hot American Summer, The Office, Peak SNL. Not as absurd as British comedy. Just horribly awkward humanism to the extreme.

You need need need to watch Waiting For Guffman and A Mighty Wind. They're essentially a trilogy. They're all almost entirely the same cast and the same director. Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are amazing in all three of them.

The first five seasons of HH are the best. After that the idiots leave. The whole series is based from the books by Terry Deary who appears in some episodes. The history shown is very good with only limited mistakes mainly bought on by changes in information.

Victoria hosts Only Connect, which I maintain is the hardest quiz show on TV (I haven’t seen harder at least). Fun fact that tells you a lot about that show: Only Connect originally used Greek letters to denote questions (contestants would pick a Greek letter from the set provided, and each letter corresponded to a question). However, the audience apparently complained that this was ‘too pretentious’, so the Greek letters were changed … …to hieroglyphs

The offensive instrument was a Stylophone, which enjoyed a brief spell of fame in the 80's when promoted by an even more offensive person Rolf Harris ( an Australian that I am not sure how many Australians know, but very famous in the UK ).
