That's an open note, you play the string without pressing a fret

These are so fun to skip ahead and try to figure out the fingerings on my own before seeing how you do it. I really learn so much from doing that. Thanks for another tutorial!

Nice video, this is a song that sound easy to play. Could you please explain what is the finger pattern? Are all the chords played or only the ones corresponding to the tab pressed?
@MKFingerstyleAcademy
@MKFingerstyleAcademy 3 күн бұрын
I am not sure I understand the question but I am playing what is on the tab (only what is on the tab), with the exception of few ornaments here and there If you meant French chords (aka strings) then yes I am only playing the strings corresponding to the tab

@@MKFingerstyleAcademy Thank you for your answer, sorry I was not really clear. I wanted to understand if, for example for the first note only the first ukulele chord was played or if there was a sort of fingerpicking pattern, but if I understood your reply correctly, the only ukulele chord picked is the one required in the tab. Thanks a lot, I will keep exercising 🙂

I ❤ this arrangement. I'd say I'm intermediate level at best on guitar, so grsde 6 is a bit of a push for me, but the Mrs (school music teacher who LOVES Muse) is impressed ive learnt the verse (playing through very slowly) in one evening. I think ill avoid trying to hit that harnonic note for as long as possible going forward. 😂

This is beautiful, I used to play the very first part on guitar years ago but quit playing for many years. Now I have just taken up the baritone ukulele and I tried this but it seems you are playing in a different key than my uke is tuned to DGBE, what should I re- tune it to for this piece please and thank you.
@MKFingerstyleAcademy
@MKFingerstyleAcademy 11 күн бұрын
You shouldn't change the tuning. Intervals wise we're playing the same thing, my tuning is low g, which is just a transposed version of baritone tuning except a perfect 4th above... I highly recommend you just play the tab as is, and accept that you sound different from the video..you shouldn't play along the video anyways because this is a difficult piece If you really need to, my tuning is the common low g: Low g, C E A good luck!

@@MKFingerstyleAcademy Thanks so much for your generous response! You're talking higher level music theory here than what I actually know :( but I wonder if the instrument you are playing in the video is a baritone Ukulele or a different type of ukulele? And if it is a baritone ukulele, did you retune it to the low G tuning for Classical Gas?
@MKFingerstyleAcademy

Basically, if you have the tab infront of you, just play it as is and it will sound good (proper), yet different from my specific recording. This is true for all low g and baritone tabs, they have that relationship where the tab is identical but they sound different. (note that the notation would be different, but the tab would be identical) I am playing a custom made tenor, link to it is at the bottom of all my videos, it is made by Ken Solomons

Without lessons or courses, might take forever, with private lessons approximately 3 to 4 years if you work hard, possibly longer if you have life distractions which is totally understandable. I took 1 year to get to grade 8 but I was very intense in doing it. With courses, you're looking at about 3 to 4 years as well but without weekly meetings and MUCH cheaper than getting a teacher. First 4 grades are about 2 to 3 months each, grade 4 to 6 each grade is about 4 to 8 months if not longer, and grade 7 or 8 expect each to be a year long process, but at that point you're basically playing whatever you want

Have one of each. Both are fun and appropriate different styles of music. High g… more traditional Low g… lends itself to a broader spectrum of music. Those who “refuse” low g are limiting their experience with the ukulele. I held out for years strictly because the “purist” frown low g. Big mistake. I have six uke…. All sizes and tunings. They all get played.

Man! Leaning master of puppets from tabs is hard tho.. It’s hard. I have to count the tabs each time 😂 Of course, it’s easier with it, just finding the tempo isn’t.. and having to memorise the entire thing? Jesus, I’d rather play Rush E on my piano.

I got my baroque guitar 1.5 years ago...cost me around $5500 CAD, worst experience of my professional career to date...I still haven't played the guitar and it is still being repaired for the 3rd time! I hope your luthier is not the luthier I dealt with!! baroque guitars can be a lot of fun!!!
@Montcalf091
@Montcalf091 21 күн бұрын
@MKFingerstyleAcademy I had a chance to play on one guitar made by my luthier and it was really nice and comfortable, especially for an instrument costing 1500 euro. I am hoping for the best, maybe one day I'll sell it and buy a better instrument, but I spend most of my time with baroque lute and theorbo, so baroque guitar will likely see occasional use in continuo playing. Best wishes to you and your guitar (so it gets repaired right)!

I'm kind of puzzled why the tab has dotted notes....I don't hear any kind of swing
@MKFingerstyleAcademy
@MKFingerstyleAcademy 21 күн бұрын
Hello William, there are few things to consider here, I'll put them in point format so they're easier to digest: - Swing does not equal dotted notes! In fact, if it is consistently dotted rhythm then it is not swing anymore - Dotted Rhythms have been in music for at least 500 years (swing hasn't), - Dotted rhythms can be see in notated music in various forms from the inception of standard notation and even before when first versions of tablatures where published for renaissance guitars (later baroque guitars) I hope this helps
@williamnelson5995
@williamnelson5995 17 күн бұрын
@MKFingerstyleAcademy Hmm I guess my question was really what are the dotted notes signifying in this song? Does it mean the first notes of the waltz triplets are being sustained longer than the next two? It kind of sounds that way but it sounds like the sustain is for all 3 beats, whereas a dotted eighth note I thought would only signify an extra 16th sustain...?

Are all of your arrangements using a deeper 1st string, instead of the typical high G? I love all of your song choices. Many things I’ve practiced of guitar. Just wanted to make sure I could play these with my basic ukulele I got in Hawaii :)
@MKFingerstyleAcademy
@MKFingerstyleAcademy 23 күн бұрын
Yes, 99% of my arrangements are recorded in Low g, which is the 4th string not first. I'd say about 30 to 40% of my arrangements also come in high G, my music sheet store will give you an idea since you can filter it by tuning. And you can also swap strings easily if you're interested in a specific arrangement but don't want to own 2 ukuleles The majority of my students (and myself) own multiple ukuleles though, at least one of which is in low g tuning all the best!
@leehicks3172
@leehicks3172 23 күн бұрын
@ thank you for your clarification. I have one last little question. Will it work by just tune my fourth string high G down to a low G tuning or do I need to change the string for it to work?? I definitely plan to get more ukuleles very soon and I will definitely have one that is permanently low G tuning
@MKFingerstyleAcademy
@MKFingerstyleAcademy 23 күн бұрын
I want to say no, I haven't heard of a case where it works but you can literally try it now and see what happens! My intuition though says no!

if you look at my really old videos (look up Stairway to heaven and videos around that period, I believe 4 years ago), you'll see me playing a Concert ukulele with high g originally, I changed the 4th string to guitar's D string and tuned that one up to G...it worked, but if your ears can tell, those videos had all sort of intonation issues...my current custom made ukulele is gold...and proper 4th string is one part of the story...maybe this message will get you started on your own journey :)

I grew up in a more traditional demonitation of Christianity, we would sing these sort of songs during church services. This brings back the nostalgia of sitting in church with my parents or grandparents, listening and singing church music. I enjoyed church music quite a bit 😊 it was the nice part of the sermon. Even now listening to you play this, I am humming along the text in my head.
